The basilisk first appears in western literature in the Natural History of the Roman Pliny the Elder, who says that basilisks look like snakes with a white spot on their heads. Its venom is so deadly that anyone who comes near it dies immediately. But there is nothing in the legend of the animal that says that it causes things to catch fire, though later medieval legends say that it can turn those who see it to stone.
