Down and Out in Academy Hills was a superb episode of Young Hercules and I really enjoyed watching. I was a little confused when Hercules didn't recognize Hephaestus when he was in previous episodes. The story was still good and intriguing as Hera cast Hephaestus out of Olympus for not acting Godly enough. It was great to see the characters learn lessons and have growth. Hercules bonded with his half brother though didn't find out more about Zeus. I look forward to watching the next episode!!!!!!!!!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Iolaus lost a large hank of hair when Hercules chopped it off saving him, but in later scenes there is no sign of that loss from his head.

    • TRIVIA: In this episode, Hephaestus invents an espresso machine for Kora, and uses it to make himself a cappuccino.

    • Hercules and his friends don't recognize Hephaestus, in spite of the fact that he shared a number of adventures with the cadets in previous episodes. This is probably because this episode was written before the others. Many times episodes are aired out of order of them being filmed.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Hercules (after Iolaus pulls a boot out of the water while they fish): Keep trying, Iolaus. Maybe next time you'll find one for your left foot!
Jason: I know what's for lunch- filet of sole.

    • Iolaus (as Hercules prepares to rescue him Arges by chopping off some of his hair): No! Not the hair!

  • NOTES (0)

  • ALLUSIONS (3)

    • Hephaestus can remember his mother, but draws a blank on his father. In many myths Hephaestus was said to be Hera's child alone, just as Athena was said to have emerged from Zeus' head spontaneously. Other myths made him the son of Zeus and Hera together.

    • Title: Down and Out in Academy Hills

The title alludes to the 1986 movie Down and Out in Beverly Hills starring Nick Nolte, Bette Midler and Richard Dreyfuss.

    • Except for the attacking giant part, this episode is an allusion to the actions of Hera. In most myths it's stated that Hephestaus was born lame, which is why he is depicted as not very good-looking in this show. Hera was ashamed and cast him down to earth. But she took him up again, and he became her favorite. His personality corresponds with mythology. His hatred for Ares is accurate too. According to mythology, Ares slept with Aphrodite, goddess of love and Hephestaus' wife. Heph was a little pissed about that and punished both of them.
