The Lightning Boy from Another World

Episode Summary

Kiyo is a junior high student who's a genius, yet repeatedly cuts his classes because he is literally smarter than most teachers in the school. Meanwhile, in a forest in England, Kiyo's father who is an archaeologist discovers a mamodo child named Zatch, who has no memory of who he is or of his past. Kiyo's father sends Zatch to Kiyo as a sort of mentor. However, Kiyo doesn't take kindly to Zatch's efforts. The 14-year-old pulls a prank on the boy by saying he'll rescue Zatch from the schoolyard bully. Even as Zatch is pummeled by the bully, Zatch continues to stick up for Kiyo. Kiyo finally steps out from behind a door to aid Zatch, and basically gets his butt kicked. Then out of the blue, a skateboarder rides onto the roof with another kid like Zatch on his shoulder and, somehow, blows away the bully. Literally. The skateboarder, Eido, attempts to claim Suzy, Zatch's newly-found friend and Kiyo's childhood friend, as his prize. Zatch and Kiyo are both overwhelmed by anger, and with the help of a magic book and forces that they can't explain, get rid of the strange teenager and the smaller boy with a viscous lightning bolt. As Kiyo wonders about Zatch's true power, two others watch from afar. Others that know things far too terrible for anyone to know.moreless

  • A decent start, it is quite different from the manga.

    I love this series, but the very first episode was not very good in my opinion. Now, the original Japanese version may have been much better than the English dub, but I have only seen the English dub so I would not know. I have read that Zatch is naked in a scene or two in the Japanese version. In the American dub underwear was put on him. Also, Kane (or however you spell his name) was defeated by Zatch and Kiyo instead of Hyde and Eido in the manga. In fact, the Hyde and Eido characters were created just for the anime, they never appeared in the manga. I did not like the change because the manga is awesome. So anyway, I think that I am being generous giving this episode an 8. Thankfully the show really picked up in the episodes that followed this one.moreless

    I guess the first episode was kind of sad. I thought after I learned that kyo was a genius that we NEVER see him use his intelligence when fighting mamodos with only a few exceptions. Althought I liked all the characters pretty much Kyo was the only one who I didn't quite like. He wasn't so funny and he was a butt. It was kind of sad too how he didn't have friends and like some of us know what it feels like to have that burn in our chest. Overall it was an average introduction, but I have seen better ones.moreless

    This is a great start to a good show. The plot is a boy from another world who lost his memories of it. It is a contest for 100 mamodo to see who becomes the new king. Its a fight to burn the other mamodoes books. Different mamodo have different motives and ways of fighting. They also have different spells in their books. Once the two partners, one the momodo, and the other the spell book user, grow stronger they are able to learn another spell. It is unpredictable of what kind of spell, but there are other secrets within the books.moreless

    This is the first episode of Zatch Bell. In this episode, Zatch and Kiyo first meet. I love this episode so much. It is funny and cute. You get to meet the characters for the first time. You get to see how lazy and stubborn Kiyo is. Also, you see Zatch for the first time and see how happy and hyper-active he is. Its funny how they meet. Zatch is flying a bird and storms into Kiyo's room, NAKED! Ha ha ha! Too bad the English dubber sensored that part. Well, I guess it is a good thing they did that.moreless
