The 1992 Game Boy Game "Bart Simpson's Escape from Camp Deadly" was loosely based on this episode.
(edit)
This episode was going to be the Simpson's first feature film, but the idea was scrapped when the writers had enough trouble coming up with 18 minutes of story, let alone 80.
(edit)
Blackboard Joke: This punishment is not boring and meaningless.
Couch Gag: The Flintstones are sitting on the couch and Fred invites the family to join. (edit) Mr. Black was meant to be a recurring character that would run corrupt business, but died off amoung the staff when they tried to bring him back. (edit)

Marge: Lisa, watch out for poison ivy. Remember, leaves of three, let it be.
Homer: Leaves of four, eat some more! (Laughs) (edit) Marge: Homer, you do remember your promise to the children?
Homer: Sure do. When you're eighteen, you're out the door! (edit) Barney: (dressed in a poor Krusty costume) Yeah Bart, I am so "crunchy" the clown.
*burps* (edit) Mr. Black: Now I must tell you kids Krusty has laryngitis and a bad back so he won't be saying anything or doing anything.
Milhouse: Krusty looks fat.
Lisa: He's really having trouble keeping his balance.
Ralph: He's still funny, but not ha-ha funny. (edit) Bart: So I won't be able to go to camp?
Homer: Now Bart, we made this deal because I thought it would help you get good grades, and you didn't. But why should you pay for my mistakes? (edit)

When Bart opens his locker, you can see the potato experiment that he was working on in the episode "Dead Putting Society."
(edit)
Bart's locker combination is 36-24-36, a reference to the 1977 hit song "Brick House" by The Commodores.
(edit)
This episode ends with the song "South of the Border", which is sung by Gene Merlino impersonating Frank Sinatra.
(edit)
During Mr. Black's first appearance, his mouth moves at one point but he is not talking.
(edit)
As the bus pulls past a large totem pole, a sign reads "Kamp Krusty: The Krustiest Place on Earth."
(edit)
Krusty: Where were you when I sang at Farm Aid?
Farm Aid started as a benefit concert on September 22, 1985, in Champaign, Illinois, held to raise money for family farmers in the United States. The concert was organized by Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp. Today, Farm Aid is an organization that works to increase awareness of the importance of family farms, and puts on an annual concert of country, blues and rock music with a variety of stars. (edit) Lisa: Our arts-and-crafts sessions are in fact a Dickensian workhouse.
The children being forced to make Gucci wallets reminds Lisa of a workhouse in Victorian England where children work long hours and are essentially slaves. Charles Dickens often wrote about places like this, most memorably in his novel Oliver Twist. (edit) Disneyland / The Magic Kingdom
A common nickname for "Disneyland" theme park in California is "The Happiest Place on Earth", and for "The Magic Kingdom" theme park in Florida it is similarly "The Most Magical Place on Earth," whereas Kamp Krusty's motto is "The Krustiest Place on Earth," an obvious parody on both of the Disney theme parks. Another slightly sarcastic allusion to Disneyland comes at the end of the episode when Krusty says they are going to "the happiest place on Earth: Tijuana, Mexico!" (edit) Far From The Madding Crowd
The scene where Lisa gives the rider on the horse the letter and whiskey as payment is taken from the 1967 film Far From The Madding Crowd. (edit) Ben Hur
In the arts and crafts scene, as the kids make the wallets Kearney beats a drum just like the drummer in the galley slave segment of the 1959 film Ben Hur. (edit)
