Near the episode's climax, Marge mentions the infamous investigative report by Dateline NBC on the design of the fuel tanks on 1973-1991 Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks. Trucks from that era had their gas tanks outside the frame rails, which would shield the tank in the event of a side-impact crash (newer trucks have the tank inside the frame); several real-life accidents involving the trucks had resulted in deadly fires.
Only after the segment aired in late 1992 was it revealed that the trucks were rigged to explode at the right time (apparently – 1. to illustrate how easily the trucks' gas tanks can burst apart during a side-impact crash; and 2. because several previous attempts to get the truck to burst into flames failed). edit » - The name of the Wild Animal Kingdom zoo pays homage to the classic educational TV series, Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. edit »
- Springfield Elementary School teachers sing (badly, of course) the song "Not Gonna Teach Forever" to the melody of "Fame." edit »
- Thanks to Principal Skinner's bumbling, he and Superintendent Chalmers botch Abbott and Costello's classic "Who's on First" routine seconds into the act. edit »

Much of the episode's plot satirizes ownership of sport utility vehicles (SUVs), which had exploded in popularity during the 1990s.
The female-oriented F-Series – which Homer buys in his usual gotta-have-it-haste – references many female-oriented vehicles that have been marketed by automakers over the years. These have included an entire series (i.e., the Canyonero), or a special option package for a specific model, which usually were little more than paint and upholstery options designed to appeal to women with several convenience features thrown in. Examples of the latter include the La Femme package for full-sized top-line Dodges back in the 1950s, and the Ford Mustang's Fashion Group in 1978. edit »
