Martha hides the spaceship key she retrieved in an earlier episode, by hiding it in the fruit cellar near the spaceship, but she inhales meteor-affected spores and collapses. Jonathan and Clark get her to the hospital, and the Disease Control Agency gets involved after being notified of the case by Dr. Bryce (Emmanuele Vaugier, in her third Smallville appearance), who reveals that Martha is pregnant. The DCA searches the Kent farm, forcing Clark and Pete to move the spaceship, but Clark became infected, loses some powers, and control of the Dodge pickup. In a bit of clever camera work, he and Pete appear to push the truck back onto the road.
So far so good, until the storyline stretches too far with camo-geared troops guarding the DCA cache of contaminated material and helicopters and Humvees instantly ready to pursue any intruders, like the bull-in-a-china-shop Jonathan. His break-in to get back the spaceship key, easily found in a plastic baggie (which wouldn't protect anyone from a real contamination threat) ends in a clever escape ruse. The chase has the unbelievably efficient military-sheriff intercept thwarted by Pete who is actually driving the Kent's truck. The activated spaceship provides a "miracle" cure for Martha, then we have a nice tension build-up when Dr. Bryce gets a blood sample from Clark while in his weakened state. She discovers it's radical differences, and tries to hide the analysis from Lex, who offers her the key to his mansion, and a bribe to a hospital tech to get the blood report.
As Clark recovers at home, Chloe visits in her red New Beetle cabriolet, and, in a touching scene, quietly reads a love letter to him while he lies sleeping. The FX folks create an impossible celestial event - a rising crescent moon pointing upward - toward a sun which has already set - time for an astronomical advisor. Ms. O'Toole and Ms. Mack do the best acting here, for a re-run rating of B-.
Fever-Martha catches a lungful of kryptonite-irradiated spores and slips into a coma. Clark, who temporarily loses his powers by breathing in the same spores, is her only hope for survival. Lex sneaks behind Helen's back at the hospital in his continued search for the truth about Clark.
A drama filled episode that sees the Kent family enduring the biggest problem yet when Martha falls into a deadly illness. Martha's illness brings up a lot of revelations like her being pregnant and that the Clark's spaceship made it happen. It's a shocking and intriguing development how the ship has powers of its own and can give life. The kryptonite induced spores aren't as bad as they sound and the way they disempowered Clark for a while was affective. the best scene in the episode is Chloe reading her romantic letter to Clark while he was unconscious. Allison Mack completely steals the show and her confession of her love for Clark is touching. Then, or course, the moment is ruined by Clark as he utters the words "Lana" bringing more melodrama to the annoying love triangle that's been going on between Clark, Chloe and Lana, sigh! I also like the development of Clark's blood being abnormal and Helen being in on Clark's secret as well as keeping it. It makes things interesting as it gives Lex fuel to continue to secretly investigate Clark. The special effects are always a plus and the scene of the ship healing Clark and Martha toward the end with a beautiful white light is stunning. A heartwarming episode with some nice developments and revelations.
Martha, who has been hiding the key to the spaceship, becomes extremely sick from inhaling dust of green meteor rock that was underground. The Kent farm is quarantined, and the key discovered. Clark, who inhaled the meteor dust as well, falls sick too. After testing his blood, Dr. Helen Bryce realizes that Clark is different. Martha is revealed to be pregnant after the ship removes her poisoning. In "Fever", it is disclosed the miraculous healing power of the aircraft. The story is very tense, with a good plot point. Chloe Sullivan discloses her secret love masqueraded as friendship for a feverish Clark Kent.
So both Martha and Clark get infected by the kryptonite spores in the storm cellar that Martha stirs up trying to hide the spaceship key. Martha falls into a coma, and Clark has episodes of fainting and weakness. The DCA take the key and samples. hide show
Season two has many emotional episodes, and this is no exception. Martha being near death in the hospital is tempered by Jonathan hearing the news that she is pregnant. Still, she gets worse, and Clark is so sick he's unconscious. When Chloe comes to the Kent farm to visit the ailing Clark, she reads him a letter she wrote, so she doesn't have to look at him while telling him her feelings, and her words truly are elegant and heart-rending when she tells the unconscious Clark that she is the girl of his dreams masquerading as his best friend. Clark stirs briefly, and says, "Lana?" which is a stake into Chloe's heart I could feel with a piercing sadness. Jonathan hopes that recovering the key, and putting it in the slot in the spaceship will somehow cure Martha and Clark, and even staggeringly, Clark helps him, and Pete is their getaway decoy. When they let the key float onto the spaceship they've driven near the hospital, moments after Martha is pronounced dead, a blinding light comes out of the spaceship and enters the hospital, curing both Clark and Martha. After she wakes, she admits she was afraid the key would somehow take Clark away from them. Meanwhile during Clark's infirmity, Dr. Bryce managed to take a blood sample from Clark she knows is most peculiar. Of course Lex is more than intrigued and hopes to find out what she learned, but so far, she keeps the secret. At the Torch, Lana finds Chloe's discarded speech to Clark, and tells him later that both Chloe and she were very scared for him, and realized how much they care, even if she isn't as eloquent as others might be. Chloe really is a superior person, full of intelligence and appeal, and I'm sorry that I already know she never "gets her man," because she truly is worthy of a superhero boyfriend, if only Clark could see how great she is. Sure, Lana is the hottest chick in Smallville, but Chloe is my favorite, especially in episodes like this one.
Watchable but predictable... hide show
I hear many people complaining about how Martha miraculously got pregnant, so i have to clarify...the ship made it possible!...Anyway, kinda loved some of the scenes in this episode, the part where Clark catches Martha just as we think she is about to fall on the glass, the beginning of Lex and Helens doomed relationship...and of course my personal favourite, when Chloe confessed her feelings to Clark when hes sleeping. It will be one of my favourite ever episodes, i mean come on, who wasn't nearly crying....DAMN Lana! Anyway i recommend this episode as worth watching, even though we do know whats going to happen.
