While Clark tries to keep Jimmy from finding out his secret, Lois accepts a date with a new colleague. (some spoilers) hide show

Recap: Jimmy tries to sell Lois on a story about Metropolis's latest "stealth crimefighter" (Clark), when they are suddenly attacked by a mugger. When Lois tries to fend him off, she falls into the path of a moving vehicle, but Clark arrives in time and saves her using his superspeed. However, in an attempt to get a picture of the mugger's face, Jimmy inadvertantly snaps a photo of a red-and-blue blur in the middle of saving Lois. The next day, after failing to convince Jimmy that the photo is useless, Clark tries to get Chloe to delete it. Instead, she argues that the photo doesn't reveal his identity, but that it helps him create "the perfect alter ego." Eventually, Jimmy realizes that Clark is the blur in the photo, so Clark devises a plan to protect his identity, recruiting Oliver and Chloe to help him. Meanwhile, Lois accepts a date with new colleague Sebastian Kane, a meteor freak who's been recruited by Tess to find out if Lois stole the Kryptonian crystal (see INSTNCT).

My Review: OK, right up front, the whole Clark-runs-around-trying-to-keep-his-secret-from-Jimy plotline was kinda lame, and I hated that Jimmy -- as in bow-tie-wearing cub reporter Jimmy Olsen -- figured out Clark's secret almost immediately, whereas it took Lex, Clark's former best friend, *years* to figure it out. And even then, Lex had to be told by Brainiac. *However*, I'm willing to overlook that since Clark gets one step closer to becoming the Big Blue Boy Scout we all know and love. Well, that, and 'cause of the Clois moments, of course. Speaking of, how sweet was it that Clark rushed to Lois's aid as soon as he realized she was in danger? Then again, she knew she could count on him, which is why she called him and not Chloe or Oliver. And for showcasing that aspect of the Clois relationship, I offer up most humble thanks to the Powers That Be. Also, thanks to TPTB for slipping in Lois smiling during the dress-zipping flashback; no doubt, a bone they decided to throw us Clois fans. In any case, moving on. I like how creative the writers got when it came to trying to throw Jimmy off Clark's scent, so to speak, and I loved the mention of the Clois kiss in HYDRO. All in all, eight blurry photos out of ten. (P.S. what was up with Kyle Schmidt's hair? I mean, it looked so good on BLOOD TIES; what happened between then and now? And who convinced him that's a good look?)

Highlights: Clark saving Lois; Clark's debate with Chloe about Jimmy's photo; Clark zipping up Lois and exchanging some banter; Clark and Chloe trying (and failing) to convince Jimmy that Clark's completely normal; the flashback of Clark zipping up Lois, from Lois's POV; Clark checking in with Chloe and Oliver; Clark coming to Lois's rescue; Clark and Lois discussing her date, and Lois's "new mission in life"; Clark discussing capes and his destiny with a sober Oliver; and Chloe creatively protecting Clark's identity from "Sebastian".

Clarks Identity in Trouble... The end is an amazing twist... Awesome adding to the brilliants of smallville... hide show

Jimmy and lois are walking down the street when a man mugs them, with the flash of Jimmy's camera, clark super-speeds into the camera sight saving lois from a passing car. Later we see the picture printed with a red and blue blur in the focus, with lots of research Jimmy guesses that is clark when he sees a photo of him with his parents wearing red and blue... Clark denies it...

Clark sets up a plan with chloe (awesome, pretty and smart), and Oliver to trick Jimmy in thinking it was a mask man aka oliver instead of clark... The next day the picture is published front page, Jimmy says to Clark that he wishes he was him cause he someone everyone can rely on... The whole time lois is on a date with sebastian (a meteor freak from black creek), who realises that lois knows about him, heading to her apartment he tries to kill her.

In the hospital we see Sebastian in bed, and chloe standing watching, asking him how much of the man who stopped him story/life he got through. Admits alot, Chloe takes off her gloves. touches him cause his brain to overload and die. I can believe it, i remember it happening in another episode but i cant remember which one... The one with glove in the hospital.

Smallville's writers are back on top. Adventure, humor, plot twists, shocking developments, exposure of Clark's identity, and that's just the first half! hide show

"Identity" is the best of the season - Lois, Oliver, and Tess are back! The writers and producers continue to develop Clark rapidly into the hero he's destined to be. It's a classic episode - even though the theme is familiar - someone almost discovering Clark's identity. That usually means the "someone" is going to die, but not this time. Jimmy's blurred photograph of Clark rescuing Lois from a mugger leads to some quick investigation and his stunning conclusion - Clark is the local superhero, going way back to Smallville High School days.

Mr. Ashmore gets his best role in a long while - digging up facts, sharing his insight with Clark, until the light dawns, and he knows, and further discerns that Chloe has known for a long time. Clark will have to produce a big ruse to get Jimmy off the trail, even though Jimmy promises secrecy. "I've got your back!" he says. Clark's attempts to deflect, delay, and explain away all Jimmy's evidence has zero effect on Jimmy - he's just as dogged in this pursuit as Lois in hers.

Another ex-captive of the Black Creek facility is introduced - as a newly-hired reporter for the DP, and his hidden ability is memory capture from anyone he touches. At least he has the good taste to touch Lois a couple times. My initial reaction was negative - not another new character to absorb! But Sebastian (Kyle Schmid) does well with the secret-ability role, and if it's meteor-rock-based, it's not even mentioned. These short-term antagonists have often been played as trivial cartoon figures, not very frightening. His being used by Tess to learn who might know about the blue crystal makes a lot of sense, and her blackmail against him to keep him on the trail is just like her.

When Lois catches Clark red-handed at Chloe's apartment, looking for Jimmy's camera, we are treated to two more amusing scenes. After some terse words, Lois asks Clark for a zip-up on her date dress. He obliges, awkwardly, despite her allure. Then when Sebastian arrives, a handshake with Clark is conveniently blocked by Lois, averting an answer to the question about whether he could scan Clark's memory - of the three possibilities, this is the most intriguing - we don't find out! And later, when Sebastian gets more memories from Lois, only then do we see her sly smile as Clark zips her up - she was manipulating him! This is the fun part of Clark and Lois - as she becomes more shrewd in finessing him and his feelings.

When Clark turns to Oliver to return the favor on protecting the Green Arrow's identity, Clark finds him with a group of rent-a-bimbos, way out of character for him, putting some more tension in his role, too. But he joins Clark and Chloe on a setup to rescue Jimmy, a night-time hit-and-run to be staged by Chloe, with Oliver playing a hilariously-caped and black-masked Green Arrow. It all looks well-planned, but an intriguing twist has everything going wrong - Lois knew about Sebastian's confinement in Black Creek and she's secretly on his trail, he attacks her for the flash drive she stole from the mansion in the season opener (nice continuity), and this case of bad timing detours Clark to rescue her. Tess has another operative-mugger after Jimmy, and it looks like the whole identity-protection plot is going south, but Oliver improvises a Spiderman-style swing across the street in a red cape to rescue Jimmy - saving him from a real perp instead of a set-up perp. What a great scene, one of the most fun in several seasons.

Ms. Durance (and her stunt double) have another tough fight scene with Sebastian, and later Lois remarks about being saved twice by the super-crimefighter, so she vows, in classic Superman-style, to track down this mysterious hero and to be the first to get an interview. She will - but I bet that won't happen until next season.

The semi-final scene with Clark and Oliver is again classic Smallville - great dialog, a resolution of the simmering resentment Oliver had about Clark's knowledge of his parent's murders, and Oliver reflecting on what he really wants - deep down, he's the Green Arrow. We laughed loudly when Clark told Ollie he looked ridiculous in the red cape, and again when Ollie suggested it as part of Clark's wardrobe. "Not in this lifetime!" Maybe he meant, "Not in this series!"

The writers leave us with another cliffhanger when Chloe comes to Sebastian's hospital room - revealing that she knew of him when she, too, was confined in Black Creek. With her potent Brainiac-enhanced mind, she somehow knows she can end any memory-theft threat from Sebastian - with a touch. Sebastian's mind is overwhelmed with her mental force - and he collapses. We are led to believe that Chloe has killed him, a shocking development, even though Sebastian's eyelid flickers a bit at the end of his lifeless stare. Wow! we thought - what has happened to Chloe? Is this her, or is it the growing influence of Brainiac? Looking forward to how the writers take us through this next adventure - and "Identity" is worth saving for further viewing! Re-run rating A.

Superman's almost revealed identity. hide show

This episode had all that it needed to be great overall - Superman stuff, Clois stuff and Chloe's power stuff - and great it was.

Although Clark was a little overdefensive, especially about Jimmy knowing his secret, he finally realizes it is not the worst thing for the world to know that there is a hero out there.

One of my favourite moments were the expressions on both Clark and Lois' faces when Clark zipped her dress.

But the scene that stood out the most, in my opininon was the final scene! To see Chloe kill Sebastian was just one of the best scenes I have seen on Smallville in a while. I knew that Chloe's new power would be one of the greatest plots on Smallville and I am dying to see how it all resolves.

  • The three-hour travel problem arises again. Sebastian gets out of the car and Tess calls her operatives to put the "attack Jimmy" plan in motion. They immediate go to work. However, it takes Sebastian three hours to take Lois back to her apartment above the Talon in Smallville. There's no indication what the muggers were doing in those three hours when the previous scene established they were going right after Jimmy. []
  • In the picture that Jimmy takes Clark is nothing but a blur while Lois can be made out clearly, but at this point both Clark and Lois would have been moving at superspeed, so it is inconsistent that they should appear so differently in the photo. []
  • In the opening scene, we see a visual effect of Jimmy's camera flash light moving slowly, much slower than Clark himself. This seems to indicate that when Clark superspeeds he moves faster than light, which he clearly wouldn't be doing. []
