Clark: Merry Christmas, Lana.
Lana: Merry first Christmas together, Clark. The first of many. (edit) Lex: Something I still can't quite believe, me and Lana. Now, how the hell did that happen?
Clark: I dunno. You became the kind of man she could love.
Lex: You mean the kind of man you've always been. (edit) Lex: I know what you're thinking.
Lana: That you've given into your son again? That you're spoiling him?
Lex: Exactly, and I can certainly understand how you reached that conclusion. The thing is, this tree is for me. Lana, I don't know if I've ever told you this, but after my mom died, my father didn't allow Christmas to be celebrated in our house. It was a very bleak, very lonley time for me, and when I saw this tree, I knew it was exactly like the ones I dreamed about all the years I couldn't have one. Somehow, it represented all the Christmases I'd missed. Can you understand that?
Lana: Of course I can, honey. It's the same thing you tell me every year. (edit) Clark: Listen, I don't wanna be nosy, but I was just wondering, Santa, what're you doing up here? I mean, why are you going to jump?
Drunken Santa: Give me one good reason why I shouldn't. You can't, can you? You got a good look at the world lately? It's all take, take, take and bitch, bitch, bitch. What happened to Christmas? Peace on Earth, goodwill to men? I'll tell you something. The spirit of Christmas is dead! And it's going to take a lot more than Santa Claus to revive it. (edit) Clark: Are you all right? You're a little close to the edge, aren't you?
Drunken Santa: Makes it easier to jump.
Clark: Yeah, I guess it does, doesn't it? (edit)

On the award Jonathon shows Lex it says:
The
Kansas Humanitarian
Award
Bestowed by the governor
And legislation of
The state of Kansas
Upon
Lex Luther
In recognition of
His generosity and
Dedication in providing
Housing for the homeless (edit) When Lex is paralyzed in his hospital bed at Smallville Medical Centre, Lionel makes a phone call from his cell phone. Cell phones have to be shut off whenever you are inside a hospital. (edit) Since Lex's near-death fantasy/dream may be exactly that, many inconsistencies within it can be explained or ignored since they are possibly hallucinations, rather then a glimpse of an actual future or his mother appearing to him as a ghost. They may in fact simply be manifestations of Lex's irrational subconscious fears and desires. (edit) In Season 4, Lionel says that Lex tends to be attracted to girls who look like his mother and have long dark hair. However, Lillien's hair in this episode is reddish brown. (edit)

Chloe: You're faster than a speeding bullet!
This quote is a reference to the classic introduction to Superman from The Adventures of Superman, saying he is faster then a speeding bullet. (edit) Lex: Much like Ebenezer Scrooge, I realised that what I want more than anything is to live happily ever after.
Ebenezer Scrooge was the main character of A Christmas Carol, written by Charles Dickens. He was a cheap old man who changed his life around after three ghost visited him on Chrismas eve. (edit) Clark: (to Lex) You have a wonderful life...
An in-joke/allusion to Jimmy Stewart movie called, It's a Wonderful Life where lead character George Bailey is shown what life would be like if he had never been born. There are other similarities: at the end of the episode when Lana is dying on Christmas Eve, Lex visits his father for help to save Lana, much like George Bailey did when he visited his nemisis Mr. Potter to ask for a last-minute loan to get him out of a crisis. Both men were found at their desks working on Christmas Eve. And both Lionel Luthor and Mr. Potter (played by Lionel Barrymore) refused any help whatsoever. (edit) Clark: I am now officially a full-fledged news reporter.
Superman's mild-mannered secret alias of Clark Kent was a reporter for the The Daily Planet. (edit) Milk and Cookies
Clark eats the cookies and drinks the milk from the house of one kid. This is the same thing that Santa is supposed to do when he enters a house and leaves presents. (edit)
