Solid Gold featured pop music performed live (lip synch) in front of an audience along with the hot Solid Gold Dancers. The dancers counted down the Top 10 hits of the week and generally appeared with a couple of the weeks guests on stage. Several hosts shared top billing over the 8 seasons with either Dionne Warwick or Marilyn McCoo on for 7 of the 8 seasons. Other regulars included comedians such as Marty Cohen, Jeff Altman, Arsenio Hall, and Wayland Flowers and Madame. Season 1-4 were videotaped at KTLA (Golden West), while seasons 5-8 were staged at Paramount Studios (Stage 29). Shows were filmed two at a time over a two day period every 2 weeks in front of a live audience.

The show was very hot for the first 3 seasons and enjoyed good ratings but as ratings slipped in 1984 experiments were made with different hosts; and formats which eventually led to the end of the top 10 countdown by season 7. At the peak the Solid Gold Dancers appeared in Calenders, Posters, teen magazines, and on telethons and the Miss Teen USA pageant.

Dancers were replaced (on average 2-3 per season) frequently. Auditions were held, sometimes accross the country, and dancers were added to the show. Competition was tough at the "cattle-call auditions" that were often presided over by the principal dancer; the choreographer, and the producer of the show.

Talented variety show producer Bob Banner was executive producer for the first few seasons. Brad Lachman produced the entire series. There were 3 choreographers over the run of the show Kevin Carlise; Anita Mann, and finally Lester Wilson. Each had a unique style that can be seen in the work of the dancers. Anita appeared as a dancer in one summer special.

From 1982-1985 3 specials a year were shown during December; February; and July with the annual year end Countdown in February proving popular.

The show was syndicated to local stations on weekends. It was cancelled due to poor ratings in early 1988. None of the shows have been released on DVD. An exercise video was released with the Solid Gold Dancers in 1984. Edited reruns were seen on VH1 briefly in the 90's. You-tube often features clips from the show.less «

  This show really reminds me up of growing up in the '80s. I loved the show with the countdown and the Solid Gold Dancers, the performances and most of the hosts/hostesses. This was an hour I certainly enjoyed through the years..... hide « show »

This was an hour I certainly enjoyed through the years. I hope it's possible to see these episodes again. When they showed some on VH1 in 1998, I was there!!
