"Sonic the Hedgehog," also known as the SatAM (Saturday morning) series, was the second television program to star the famous video game icon. It followed the slapstick "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog," which was known mostly for its lighthearted approach. The SatAM, however, took on a much darker tone, telling the story of Sonic and his brave band of Freedom Fighters as they struggled to free their home world, the distant planet of Mobius from the clutches of the evil Dr. Robotnik.

The first season was an unconventional mix of cartoon characters and a grim setting. Characters were developed and mature themes were explored. The second season, on the other hand, lightened the tone considerably, emphasizing the more comedic aspects of the show and toning down the series' darkness considerably. The show ultimately ended on a cliffhanger after only two seasons due to underachieving ratings. However, this was not the end of the SatAM.

The series developed a cult following over the years resulting in countless fan fiction stories and discussion that kept show alive several years after it had been cancelled. Additionally, the Archie comic book adaptation of the "Sonic" character began to modify itself to more closely resemble the SatAM series and remained in publishing ten years after the show had been cancelled. Furthermore, the SatAM's influence was felt in additional Sonic adventures with various elements of the series being included in the "Sonic Christmas Blast!" special and the "Sonic Underground" series. The SatAM is generally agreed to be the most popular of the American-made "Sonic" cartoons.

Characters:

Sonic the Hedgehog - An egotistic blue blur of the title with an unsatiable appetite for adventure and chili dogs.

Princess Sally Acorn - Daughter of King Acorn, rightful ruler of Mobius; leader of the Knothole Freedom Fighters and Sonic's best friend.

Bunnie Rabbot - Cyborg rabbit who was in the process of being roboticized before being rescued by the Freedom Fighters.

Antoine D'Coolette - Cowardly royal guard who desperately seeks the affections of Princess Sally.

Rotor - The Freedom Fighters' mechanic.

Miles "Tails" Prower - Sonic's other best friend...like a little brother; he looks up to Sonic and hopes to make his own contribution to the Freedom Fighters.

Dulcy - Powerful but clumsy dragon; joined the Freedom Fighters.

Uncle Chuck - Sonic's roboticized Uncle.

Dr. Robotnik - Ruler of Mobius; achieved this by overthrowing King Acorn; cyborg villain.

Snivley- Robotnik's nephew and lackey.

Basic Terms:

Great Forest - Vast forest where the Freedom Fighters hide; on the outskirts of Robotropolis.

Freedom Fighter - A rebel against Robotnik's rule and not just any rebel, a soldier of the rightful King; different cells are activated when the Acorn King is in dire need; King Acorn kept a list of every Freedom Fighter group.

Knothole Village - The village hidden deep within the Great Forest where the Freedom Fighters operate.

Mobius - Faraway planet that Sonic and the other animals are from.

Mobotropolis - Former capital of the Acorn Kingdom before being taken over by Robotnik and renamed Robotropolis.

Power Rings - Rings that Sonic uses to give him some extra "juice" (speed) They are produced by a power stone every twelve hours.

Power Stone - Stone that produces power rings.

Roboticazion - Act of turning flesh into metal; robs individual of free will.


Robotropolis - Formerly Mobotropolis, the city that Robotnik rules with an iron fist.

SWATbot - Humanoid robotic soldiers under Robotnik's command.less «

• What was the worst SatAM episode?

  I'm currently tossing between Ro-becca and Fed up with Antoine...though I also hated Sub Sonic, Sonic Past Cool, Game Guy, Dulcy and the other Antoine shorts.....Aside from those particular episodes I lived the rest

  A decent cartoon. hide « show »

  I know there are plenty of Sonic shows that have aired. Different kinds of series and also different kinds of elements. I didn't really like this Sonic very much. I thought it was rather boring and it was very predictable. What I did like was the comedy of this show. I thought it was well done and the action was actually decent. It also was fairly entertaining and kept me busy for a half hour. I will also say that in terms of where it would compare to other cartoon shows, it would be in the middle. It was good to watch. Thank you.

  Easily the best Sonic cartoon. hide « show »

  Sonic the Hedgehog has spawned a few cartoons but this one, fondly known as 'SatAM' by the fans, has to be the best of them, I think, despite it only having 26 episodes made. Sure, the show is fairly cheesy, but considering it's a Sonic cartoon from the '90's, that's unsurprising. The characters are brilliant and very memorable, the plot is somewhat dark without making Sonic something he's not, and the cartoon just oozes quality. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled in 1994, but this can still be seen via the DVD boxset or possible re-runs on POP. Easily the best.

  Opinion: Look at all of the television shows that are based off of video game characters. Sadly, many of them come off as silly, with untapped potential. However, Sonic the Hedgehog managed to turn out great. While it's not the greatest cartoon, and certainly doesn't do the video game series justice (at least not the old games), I feel that it was the best Sonic cartoon.

  I made an absolute mistake and mixed this up with Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. This show is brilliant! hide « show »

  Wow is all I can say. I only though before there was AOSTH but I found out about this show a year ago and it's amazing! I love shows that have character depth and this had a chop full of them. The ending was a bit disappointing which was the reason I gave it a 9.5 but whatever, Soul Eater had a HORRIBLE ending but I still love it. I also love reading the Archie comics since it has so much depth and includes all of the characters from the show! This show is my second favorite 90s American cartoon with #1 being Rocko.

  at first,i can bear with it, after a while it gets boring as hell hide « show »

  this show reminds me of runescape or world of warcraft,good at first after ,later on,Just plain boring and repetitive sonic zooms aroung eats chili dogs goofs or robotnik plans an ub3r 3vil pl4n sonic sneak bashs up some robots sally acts like a butt kisser brown nose suck and much more to him robotnick gets pissed some makes some cheesy joke bashs up more bots destroys his " new evil machine or skeem( iknow i spelt that wrong k guys? )" and robotnik gives him the ol' you wont get away with this crap sonic! ! sonic makes some more hceesy joke eats a chili dog or to and zooms off,if you ever miss and episode,remember this process
