  • When the Japanese said "Nu-no, we don't want you to eat the whale" - This alludes to the fact that the Japanese are big consumers of whale meat. []
  • For the first time realistic drawings of the kids are shown. Nico Agnone (a relative of one of the animation crew members) was the model for Stan and Kyle according to the South Park Studios FAQ. []
  • Both times Kyle taps on the glass to get Jambu's attention, he taps four times instead of three. []
  • When the announcer says "Bunch of retards" at the end of the whale show, the audio doesn't match up with the mouth. []
  • The United States cannot pursue criminals beyond the Mexican border. []
  • There's no way that the announcers, who are up inside a glass broadcasting box, would hear the boys talking to the whale from down below. []

    The music that plays over the first scene in which the Russians enter is the intro theme music, with the chants of Jedma Dohma, of Darkstalkers. []
  • NASA:

    The Space station the boys went to in Mexico, MASA, is a pun on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. It most likely stands for Mexican Aeronautics and Space Administration. []
  • Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home:

    Capturing a whale and rescuing it via a spaceship has the 1986 film Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home written all over it. []
  • Space Cowboys:

    The final scene of this episode bears a strong resemblance to the final scene of the 2000 film Space Cowboys, where Tommy Lee Jones' character is shown to have finally made it to the moon, only to die there. []
