  • When the Japanese said "Nu-no, we don't want you to eat the whale" - This alludes to the fact that the Japanese are big consumers of whale meat. []
  • For the first time realistic drawings of the kids are shown. Nico Agnone (a relative of one of the animation crew members) was the model for Stan and Kyle according to the South Park Studios FAQ. []
  • Both times Kyle taps on the glass to get Jambu's attention, he taps four times instead of three. []
  • When the announcer says "Bunch of retards" at the end of the whale show, the audio doesn't match up with the mouth. []
  • The United States cannot pursue criminals beyond the Mexican border. []
  • There's no way that the announcers, who are up inside a glass broadcasting box, would hear the boys talking to the whale from down below. []
  • The second time Kyle talks to Jamboo, he taps the glass 4 times instead of 3. His hand hits it 3 times, but 4 taps are heard. []
  • As Jambu splashes the boys several times, you can notice Kenny isn't happy about being splashed at all. []
  • How on earth could the boys have lifted the whale out of the tank and into the swimming pool AND brought it back to Craig's house all by morning and without any notice? The average fully grown male orca weighs about 7,000 pounds, and I don't think those nine year old boys could have lifted him out of the tank super fast, brought the swimming pool out of the park with the whale in it super fast, and all gotten home before anyone knew they were gone. []
  • The Mexican version of NASA was called MASA. The word masa in Spanish means mass or dough. []
  • The A.L.F. leader bears a resemblance to PeTA founder Ingrid Newkirk. []
  • The announcer calls the whale "Shamu" when Kelly rides on his nose. []
  • It's unlikely that the whale would have stayed still during the entire time that the announcers were making it seem like it was talking. They're lucky it didn't swim away, which basically would've ruined the illusion. []
  • How could the announcers in the booth hear what Kyle was saying to the whale? They seemed to be responding to his comments. []
  • The Animal Liberation Front (ALF) is a real animal rights organization. Its website is http://www.animalliberationfront.com/. []
  • Out of respect for the death of a whale, no music was played during the end credit sequence. []
  • Owner: (reading the note) we're taking Willzyx to the moon. long live the zipods. []
  • Announcer: We hope you enjoyed Jamboo's Orca show. And enjoy the rest of your day at Denver Sea Park... (turns off microphone) you bunch of retards. []
  • Jimmy: The Chinese want 10 million dollars to take someone into space.
Kyle: Ten million dollars?!? That's more than the Germans want!
Jimmy: We told them that and they told us to go f-f*ck ourselves. []
  • Kyle: I swear to Abraham he talked and he likes rocket ships! []
  • Cartman: Okay Kyle, we're gonna go get splashed some more, but if you wanna go make love to the whale, that's fine. []
  • Cartman: Kyle, the show's over. The whale isn't gonna splash us anymore so who cares? []
  • Announcer: That's Kelly riding on Jamboo's nose.
Announcer: (aside to other announcer) I wish Kelly would ride on my nose. []
  • Announcer: And now, Jamboo's gonna give you all a big wave!
    Crowd: OOOOHH! AAAAHH! []
  • (The Russian President rushes to the phone with Kyle on the other end of the line.)
Russian President: Hello? Hello, this is Russian President.
Kyle: Hi, my name's Kyle. I understand your country flies people to space for money.
Russian President: Yes, we certainly do. What are you looking for?
Kyle: I need to book one trip to the moon, please, right away.
Russian President: The moon…that is quite large trip, but I'm sure we can do it.
    Kyle: You can? Awesome!
Russian President: It sounds like we're in business! We will just need, say, 20 million dollars?
Kyle: 20…million? Are you nuts? We don't have that kind of money!
    Russian President: What?
Kyle: But you have to understand. We have a whale here that needs to get back to his family on the moon.
Russian President: (short pause) God damn it, it is prank call, again! Kiss my ass, George Bush! This is not funny! (hangs up) []
  • Manuel: Si, si, fly... []
  • Craig: Hey, that whale talked to me too. After everyone left the show, I walked up to the glass and he started talking.
Kyle: Well, why didn't you tell anybody?
Craig: Well, I thought I was crazy. He said my dad was gonna sneak into my room naked one night and beat me up. []
  • Kyle: You guys! You're not gonna believe this! Dude, he talks... the Orca Whale talks!
Kenny: (muffled) What the f*ck are you talking about? []
  • ALF member: Save the whales, mother f**ker! []
  • Kyle: (on telephone) Hello? Jimmy? Any luck at the Chinese embassy?
Jimmy: (at Chinese embassy) The C-C-Chinese will take someone in space for t-ten million dollars.
Kyle: Ten million?! That's more than what the Germans want!
Jimmy: Yeah, we told them that and they told us to go fff**k ourselves. []

Allusions

  • When the boys are presenting the plan to free the whale to the rest of the kids, they use a "Jazzerstep" platform to stand on. []
  • Darkstalkers:

The music that plays over the first scene in which the Russians enter is the intro theme music, with the chants of Jedma Dohma, of Darkstalkers. []
  • NASA:

The Space station the boys went to in Mexico, MASA, is a pun on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. It most likely stands for Mexican Aeronautics and Space Administration. []
  • Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home:

Capturing a whale and rescuing it via a spaceship has the 1986 film Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home written all over it. []
  • Space Cowboys:

The final scene of this episode bears a strong resemblance to the final scene of the 2000 film Space Cowboys, where Tommy Lee Jones' character is shown to have finally made it to the moon, only to die there. []
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire:

The line "We're taking Ike to the new Harry Potter movie..." refers to the current Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, that was in release at the time of this episode’s production and airing. []
  • Shamu/SeaWorld:

The location in which the boys visit and its main attraction, Jamboo the performing whale, is unmistakably modeled after SeaWorld and its famous performing whale, Shamu. []
  • Free Willy:

This episode's title and stoyrline is very similar to the 1993 film Free Willy. []
