The commercial opens with the Mach 5's spinning tire; "Sabotage" is superimposed over it. The minute Japanese script at the bottom of the screen translates to: "Produced for Volkswagen of America by Arnold Communications and J.J. Sedelmaier Productions, 1996." At the race-track, Speed announces to the regular cast of characters (sans Racer X) that "the Mach 5 has been sabotaged!" Inspector Detector arrives and hands Speed the keys to a red GTI. "Huh? The Volkswagen GTI?" A checkerboard wipe takes the viewer to the race. Trixie, from the passenger seat, urges Speed on. Cars clank. Speed swerves to avoid colliding with his competitors, who crash through the guardrail. Speed crosses the finish line and wins. "This GTI is amazing!"

The next scene shows an exuberant Pops and Sparky in the back seat of the GTI. Pops responds, "And it's got room for four!" The ubiquitous stowaways, Spritle and Chim Chim, pop up exclaiming, "Make that six!" While a modernized version of the Speed Racer theme song plays, Speed recites the campaign's tag line: "On the road of life there are passengers and there are drivers." Speed drives the GTI toward the viewer and hops out of the vehicle. He freezes in his infamous "go" position, The Volkswagen logo and "Drivers Wanted" appear over a white background to close the spot. Read full recap »
