    Touchbacks!

As by my count from the box scores from Thursday, Friday & Saturday's games, I counted up 43 touchbacks on kickoffs & 14 from punts from 15 games total. I think 43 touchbacks on kickoffs is like a decades' worth! :O What a dumb NFL new rule.

Hopefully they change the rule later in the season.

On kickoffs, that's the play that results the most injuries. It's out of "safety" **puke**

Final count on pre-Week 1: 44 touchbacks on kickoffs, 16 on punts. Gonna try and keep track of this all season. I wonder how many teams are going to short kick it and try to pin them behind the 20, or just play it safe and kick the daylights out of the ball. Honestly I think 44 will go up dramatically; especially to teams with a major Special Teams KR threat. If they keep this rule, then they should move the start from a touchback to either the 25 or 30 yard line to compensate. Or just eliminate kickoffs & punts altogether and just start on the 20 automatically. Lame, I know.

Final count on pre-Week 2: 53 touchbacks on kickoffs, 11 on punts. Some teams are just kicking the daylights out of the ball, others are shortening kicks slightly to see what their Special Teams coverage units are like. Tho I'm seeing some teams even 9 yards deep in the end zone taking it out, tho probably due it to being preseason and nothing really counts. It may change come week 1.

He might be able to. I think he didn't do too good in Tennessee because he didn't have many offensive weapons outside of Chris Johnson. Now in Indianapolis he has a good group of receivers, a great tight end, and a pretty good running back. I think he may be able to win a few games until Peyton comes back.

The running/receiving corps in Indy is way stronger than the Titans', though their low YPC worries me.

Give me one good season with minimal injuries and I will be happy.

It's going to be interesting once the games start to count and to see if teams will still end up all cute and go with shorter kicks. Judging from my research, it seems like there's a fairly even split between going for touchbacks, half going for them / half shorter kicks, and intentionally going short on all kickoffs. It all depends on how arrogant your coach & and his staff are - thinking they can pin teams behind the 20 yard line or get past the 20 yard line when you're 5 to 9 yards deep in the endzone. At some point teams are going to have to stop returning kickoffs when you start so many drives between the 1 & 19 yard lines and the odds of returning long are so low.

Whoops! Forgot that the preseason ended on Friday. The totals:

    pre-Week 1: 44 touchbacks on kickoffs, 16 on punts.
    pre-Week 2: 53 touchbacks on kickoffs, 11 on punts.
    pre-week 3: 55 touchbacks on kickoffs, 12 on punts.
    pre-week 4: 55 touchbacks on kickoffs, 11 on punts.

207 / 50 out of 64 games. According to a random blog that I found, as of 2009, all NFL kickoffs were 10% touchbacks. I suspect that number will double or even triple.

And um, why is the season starting on a Thursday night?? :

6 of 7 touchbacks have been on kickoffs and it's only halftime of New Orleans vs Green Bay. The new rule does suck. You might as well make teams start on the 25 instead of kicking off.
