6 of 7 touchbacks have been on kickoffs and it's only halftime of New Orleans vs Green Bay. The new rule does suck. You might as well make teams start on the 25 instead of kicking off.

I'm not the type of guy that wants to give the Packers an inch (BEAR DOWN!) but this Randall Cobb kid looks like something special.

Now for Week 1's results in touchbacks:

Week 1: 79 touchbacks on kickoffs, 25 on punts. Monday night's Oakland / Denver game had a whopping 10 touchbacks on kickoffs and 3 on punts from a somewhat meager score of 23-20 which resulted in 5 field goals which put the score at 16-13 in the 3rd quarter. I have to imagine it was an absolute chore to sit through that game.

That's right.... SEVENTY NINE touchbacks on kickoffs, easily eclipsing the 55 recorded in pre-season week's 3 and 4 each.

Now for Week 2 in touchbacks:

84 touchbacks on kickoffs, 9 on punts. It's another record! What you're seeing is a chess game of insanity: defiant players who think they can take a ball past the 20 while 5 to 9 yards deep in the endzone, to a cocky team thinking their special teams will pin them back, or a conservative team who just kicks the hell out of the ball past the endzone and not even deal with a return and settle for the 20.

Honestly, I don't think it's even worth the effort or risk for a return, just kick the ball out of the endzone and be done with it. If I was an NFL coach, it's not my job to create excitement for fans, but to prevent the other team from putting up a long 7 points on the board in exchange for just a (likely) lousy few yards behind the 20. And anybody that kicks to Devin Hester is an absolute moron.

Vodka Vikings? Two irrelevant posts about the Vikings in a week?

NFL Week 3: 81 touchbacks on kickoffs, 10 on punts. 244 touchbacks on kickoffs, 44 on punts this season so far. These will go down slightly once bye weeks start popping up.

Lions and Bills are both 3-0, Texans are 2-1 as are the Cowboys after 6-field goal performance by rookie kicker Dan Bailey in an 18-16 win over the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football.

Over 50 posts through three weeks. I think this thread can be a success this year.

Touchbacks, like my interest in following this, is waning:

Week 4: 70 touchbacks on kickoffs, 11 on punts.

In 4 weeks total, there's been 314 touchbacks on kickoffs, 55 on punts.

Now they're 4-0 for the first time since... the '50s, I assume. What a staggering turnaround.

Actually, they went 4-0 in 1980, but if they win this week against the Bears, they'll be 5-0 for the first time since 1956.

You remember what Benny Hill said when you "assume" ? To finish up what was said, yeah the Lions went 4-0 in 1980, lost the next game, won the next one, and ended up 9-7 that season & missed the playoffs. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/det/1980.htm

I predicted last month that Megatron's Army would go 9-7 and just barely nab the last wild card berth. That could still easily happen, though the swing factor is Stafford's health, not bad mojo.
