At the beginning of the episode O'Neill appears disinterested and unknowledgeable about astronomy (while Carter is preparing to view a nearby nebula), but it was established in "Children of the Gods" and especially "Singularity" that he's an avid amateur astronomer (in fact, there it was Carter who wasn't all that interested in observing).
