As Young and Camille attempt to resolve the hostage crisis with Kiva, Destiny suffers from power fluctuations and blackouts due to its proximity to a binary pulsar.
After the secret of the Stargate's ninth chevron is discovered, a team of explorers from Earth travels to the unmanned starship Destiny , which was launched by the Ancients hundreds of millenia ago as an experiment. The new crew, not able to control the Destiny's navigation, is forced to… More complete its original mission. They travel far out into the universe, encountering new races and enemies. Stargate Universe is produced and distributed by MGM Television and Sci-Fi Channel. It is filmed at Bridge Studios and on location in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Not even SciFi!! Where are the alien races that stargate is known for?
Totally boring useless over the top dram crap. Hope it gets canceled like right now.
Only Stargate I hate!!! It sucks big time!!
I don't give a damn about any of the characters and the actors suck too.
I know when I heard about this dumb show that it would totally suck.
Bring back SG1 and Atlantis please! You are running Stargate for me and my family now. Hopefully not for life?
I don't know a single person who likes this crap.
I own every episode (dvd) of SG1 and Atlantis and I will never buy this stupid show, it sucks!! Please cancel it and move on so we the fans can get a new way better show. Thank you!!!
Did I say cancel it?
loyal fans may be let down hide show
This franchise has simply altered it course. Don't be surprised if you are disappointed with this show; expecting a similar spirit as the last two SG series. Stargate:Universe is not so much an adventure/action as it is a drama. I am sad to see that this show has change its mission. I miss the adventures, discoveries, and drama(I don't like shows with mainly, and sometime only drama).
If my elloquent review :) does not agree with you, then you most likely dig dramas, which is okay. I, however have been a SG viewer since day 1, and I am sorry to say that I might have to give up on this show. I will give it one more season to get back in the spirit. If not, then, obviously they will have a different audience than before.I say, reveal to me some mysteries and I may be a little happier...
i just wonder how could people who have watched SG1 and Atlantis rate this show perfect, really?! i agree on one thing that some actors are good even very good they seem to do their best given the bad scenario.
but come one, an ignorant not even a fan of this series understand that everybody liked SG1 and atlantis for the simple, entertaining but intelligent battle , story, special effects and of course the fun stuff and what more obvious than the fact it aired so long and we liked it !! a lot
why the hell would anybody want to watch another battle star galactica scenario based in stargate. it's my first review ever cause i can't stand seeing it and staying silent, i stopped watching around on the 4th episode and I saw the 18 or 19 to see if they were any changes, well I was right the first time, and now after so many bad reviews i see that others seems to agree with me. the worst is that i hope we will have the old style scenario back, it's a long shot but please, the story of the star gates is unique don't loose it.
does anybody knows who is responsible from the staff of directors of this change, i am sure not everybody agreed on this, this person should immediately stop working for stargate cause he or she didn't understand the essence, for the sake of the tv series, the fans and of course the money behind it (products etc..) cause they are going to lose everything. Sorry but that's the real truth
Stargate Universe dwells on the depressing details of the crew's lives, yet somehow without insight or depth. Nothing is epic, inspiring, scary, or fascinating - this show is dead inside. It's as if SGU was intentionally made to be both dull AND empty. hide show
What a pretentious waste.
Beware of the positive reviews for this show - I have a strong sense that most of the positive reviews are written by the PR people or writers for SGU, as they seem to share the same kind of inauthentic writing as the show itself. A number of people who gave "10" ratings have only posted once, here, with half completed profiles - even supposed fans of other shows.
The characters all seem to be built from 2 boring templates, as if the writers have a flawed understanding of what real people are like. A lot of Sci Fi shares this problem, but makes up for it in other ways - not so for SGU. Stargate Universe has no redeeming qualities. The concept art and design is dull and unoriginal. The stories dwell intensely on the depressing details of these people's lives, yet somehow they avoid saying anything insightful, deep, clever, dramatic or new in any way. There is nothing epic, beautiful, inspiring, frightening, creepy or fascinating - this show is dead inside. It's as if Stargate Universe was intentionally made to be uninteresting AND empty - I shudder to think what kind of person actually would enjoys this hack project. If the writers are going to make something less dramatic, then at least make it more intelligent.
These problems are too great to be fixed - they go straight to the hollow core of this show. Cancel Stargate universe to make room for something - ANYTHING - else.
Solid acting and storytelling make this a scifi show worth watching. hide show
This show is great. It's exactly the type of scifi show we need on tv. I put off watching this for a long time, due to my disappointment in the previous Stargate series. I thought SGA just seemed like SG-1 with minor tweaks in the formula, so my hopes weren't much higher for SGU. However once I started, I couldn't stop and blew through the first 20 episodes in a matter of days.
As a trekker, this show is very reminiscent of Star Trek Voyager. Stranded on a ship in another galaxy, two different crews, if you will, must work together to survive and make it back to Earth. I like the more serious nature of the show; the acting is much MUCH more solid than the campy cheese acting of SG-1 and SGA. Throughout the other SG shows, the acting was always an obstacle that really made the shows much worse than they could have been had there been better casting, another reason why I wasn't expecting much from SGU. However, the actors all seem to fit their roles better here. As for the cast highlights there's Eli, played by David Blue, a brilliant nerd who found his way to the crew by solving a puzzle in a video game and also serves as the comic relief, and is actually funny. Apparently, I'm the only one who thought SG-1 and SGA weren't that funny. Robert Carlyle NAILS the roll of Dr. Nicolas Rush, the somewhat insane scientist, very well-fleshed-out personality and probably the main antagonist. Camille Wray, played by the lovely Ming-Na, is the civilian leader, who works well as an antagonist alongside Dr. Rush. Jamil Smith is cast as Master Sgt. Greer, the loose cannon, kill'em all soldier. The rest of the cast is also spectacular, but those are my favorite characters so far. Essentially, I found the characters very believable and "real".
Part of what makes this first season great is the complex relationship between the crew. There's the civilians, lead by Camille Wray; the military, lead by Colonel Young; and then there's Dr. Rush who has his own agenda and finds ways to manipulate both Camille and Young as means to an end. This structure has so far worked well to add mystery to the mix and keep the show interesting.
I'm not even going to attempt to compare this to the other SG shows, because it's waay different. I'm not gonna lie, I'm posting this because I'm sick of seeing people try to compare SGU to SG1 and SGA. They are completely DIFFERENT shows. If you watched this hoping to see it's predecessors, then quit complaining on the forums and just go watch SG1 or SGA. I find this show much more intense and believable(if that term can even be applied to scifi). I got bored with the gate trip of the week formula that was implemented in earlier shows, and I feel the writers grasped the concept of actually releasing a show that has it's own direction instead of the generic Stargate formula. This show is very independent in both plot elements and atmosphere, as it's adopted a darker, more desperate environment. I'm still not too certain if there is a main enemy alien race in the show. There are some blue baddies that get some screen time, but as of the season 1 finale I'm not certain we'll see more of them as the Destiny (oh yeah, the ship's name is Destiny) was leaving the galaxy where the Blue dudes were at. I believe the show is going in the direction where the emphasis is more on the human crew and character development, and less on having one nemesis throughout the series. So far, the episodes have been fairly well varied between crew in-fighting, planet exploration, character development, and Earth/Destiny relations. There's been less focus on the Ancients than i would have thought. However, there have been plenty of questions raised and ideas hinted at and I'm sure the Ancients will get more screen time in later seasons.
All-in-all, I'm very excited for the future of this show. The writers have stepped outside the Stargate safe zone and attempted to forge a more original plot and concept with this one. If you're looking for the same old same old Stargate SG-1/SGA formula look elsewhere, but if you're looking for a solid scifi experience with good writing and an excellent cast, give this one a shot.
