HBO writes Dear John letter

Cable network sinks surfing drama John From Cincinnati after one season.

It's been a not-too-long, strange trip for viewers of HBO's John fom Cincinnati, but that trip is officially over. The irreverent drama from Deadwood creator David Milch has been canceled by HBO, according to The Hollywood Reporter, after just one 10-episode season.

The show eschewed typical television formulas, a risky move even for cutting-edge HBO. While some latched onto its quirkiness, others had trouble pegging the show's subject. Even after 10 episodes, many viewers still aren't sure exactly what the show's about.

We do know that it follows a family of surfers--Milch is a huge fan of the sport--in Southern California, and the effect that one strange newcomer ("John") has on the community. However, there are also some unusual circumstances; John (Austin Nichols) may be able to perform astral projections, lead Mitch (Bruce Greenwood) discovers he can levitate, several of the characters have visions, and things just seem a bit odd.

Viewers watching the show's season finale (which also happened to be the series finale) on Sunday were left with several questions, and hopes of getting those questions answered in season two have apparently been dashed by HBO. Bummer, dude.

now they can pick up The Black Donnelly's from NBC and have a true hit with what HBO has the ability to do with good writing and young acting

JFC was nice, and ended ... I don't know what to say about the end... This kind of coulourful party presentation for a surf brand ...
They just lack money to follow the real story I think. It could be a never ending season JFC, but they decided to cut it down.
To bad.
I really liked this show.
They had a very large possibility of evolution and enterteinment, surprise the audience, on a very interesting argument social life, how we humans we live, how we humans we act, etc..etc...
anyway thanx to the stuf and the creators of JFC I LOVED IT

They canceled Deadwood because it was costing something like 4 - 5 Million dollars an episode to make, with all the extras, the costumes, large cast and sets etc and that was just too much money to carry on paying out. They didn't cancel Deadwood over JfC.

I thought it was great. It was original and thought provoking. I hadn't spent as much time online reading and posting thoughts about a show since the Buffy days. What a bummer.

Deadwood is too over rated. JFC started well but just got lost in itself. Ed O'Neill was excellent in it though

Deadwood was one of the most original, engaging, poetic, and violent shows I ever watched--hypnotic. I think I made it through half an episode of this before deleting it from TiVo out of frustration. Sometimes when you push the envelope, you fall over the edge... Great cast, tho.

One of the best shows I've ever seen, and shame on HBO for not having the courage to stick with it.

And they didn't cancel Deadwood to do this, they canceled Deadwood, like they did Carnival, due to very high production cost versus audience. I don't think JFC would have been expensive to make, even with that cast.

Showtime is the new HBO

I agree, I can't believe they canceled Deadwood for this either.

I feel bad for the fans, but I never watched it.

Yeah can't believe that HBO really doesn't have good shows on anymore!
