Strike negotiations crumble

Talks between WGA and AMPTP collapse in a bitter heap; studios get nasty, call WGA proposal "completely unacceptable."

The two sides at odds in the writers strike saw the rift between them grow deeper and wider on Wednesday, as negotiations between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) dissolved with no ground gained.

The two sides returned to the bargaining table on Tuesday, but did not even come close to settling on a deal that could resolve the strike, which is mainly over residuals from new media (i.e., online sales and streaming of television programs and films). Instead, the two sides may have grown even further apart, as evidenced by each organization's statements issued Friday night after talks broke down.

In a statement directed to the WGA, e-mailed to members of the press, and posted on its Web site (PDF format), the AMPTP reversed its usual quiet summation of events and unveiled a lengthier recount of the WGA's proposals, ripping them apart and calling them "completely unacceptable in their present form, or in any altered form."

The AMPTP had previously been the quieter of the two sides, but launched a fairly scathing retort that uses the phrases "completely unacceptable," "absolute roadblock," and "widened the gap between us."

"Your determination to continue to pursue these initiatives prevents us from making any movement in any other area," the AMPTP statement says. "Therefore, unless you advise us immediately that these proposals are withdrawn, we see no purpose in continuing these talks."

The WGA's retaliation may not have used the same harsh language, but the blame game was just as evident. The WGA was particularly upset at an ultimatum the AMPTP gave it (the same letter posted on the AMPTP Web site), which the WGA sees as the ultimate reason for the breakdown of talks.

"We reject the idea of an ultimatum," said WGA Negotiating Committee chairman John F. Bowman. "Although a number of items we have on the table are negotiable, we cannot be forced to bargain with ourselves. The AMPTP has many proposals on the table that are unacceptable to writers, but we have never delivered ultimatums."

The WGA is also taking exception to the way the AMPTP handled the negotiations. The group claims that the AMPTP ultimatum was presented to the WGA "within minutes" of the negotiations ending, implying that the AMPTP was going to break off negotiations all along and had the release written well ahead of time.

"We remain ready and willing to negotiate, no matter how intransigent our bargaining partners are because the stakes are simply too high," said Bowman. "We were prepared to counter their proposal tonight, and when any of them are ready to return to the table, we're here, ready to make a fair deal."

LA Weekly's Nikki Finke has a recap of the events on Friday sewn together from various sources, and it's become a "he said, she said" argument, with representatives from both sides seeing the evening differently.

The lengthy post is summed up in one simple sentence that does not bode well for a quick resolution: "In short, things are back to being a big mess."

Wow kitten girl, how old are you? Young i'm assuming. Do you understand why they are striking? Sorry you can't watch Degrassi or any other N shows. They are on strike for what they have coming to them. If it wasn't for the writers, there wouldn't be any shows to enjoy. I completely stand behind them. Everyone should stand up for what they want. Too bad the rest of America can't seem to understand that. Why you ask? Look at all the dumb reality shows starting in Jan. Sad, sad, sad.

Just give the writers what they want!!!!!!

Enough with the stike! Can we have our shows back now? I'm pretty sure their fans aren't too happy with the way thing are turning out.

AMPTP has alot of nerve taking more money in then the WGA. Without the WGA there is nothing but reaity so just pay the writers.

Just get over yourselves people, sove the darn thing quickly, and keep my shows coming!!!

I really can't believe they are still fighting about this, obviously the big fat cats are too stringent to lose any of their precious money, even if it does anger the viewing public. How can we be on their side when it is us that gave them all that money in the first place?! Open your pockets guys, please?!

Unions are doing for the writers what they did for the auto, steel and textile industries - tens of thousands of writers will be out of work - forever as TV is flooded with more crappy high profit margin reality shows - the type of show that is for some reason very popular these days. Yep, unions strike again!

Why blame the WGA? They're not the ones with overflowing pockets, nor are they the ones that went into negotiations ready to break it off. The AMPTP is just trying to starve the WGA out, and while it may be good business, it's bad ethics and bad for us.

I think both sides are being stubborn, but I have to put most of the blame on the WGA, it's obvious they don't know how to negotiate and are making other demands on top of Internet revenues and so forth. The networks can afford to wait, while the writers can't, pretty soon there's going to be some infighting within the WGA and that's what the networks are hoping for.

Not the news I wanted to here, can they please resolve this issue or I will start striking.

reruns ,sports and reality shows for the next little while

The AMPTP are just trying to play hardball so that when the Director's Guild and Screen Actors Guild contracts come due in June and July of next year, they don't set a precedent that can be exploited. It could conceivably cost the studios millions if they don't play hardball now. All they are concerned with is money, and not giving the writers what they actually deserve. Currently the WGA gets no money at all from streamed television, even though the networks and studios make millions from advertising revenue. Their residuals from DVD sales were calculated based on grossly underestimated sales estimations. The last time the WGA was on strike was in 1988. That work stoppage lasted 22 weeks and cost the industry more than $500 million dollars. Now that the AMPTP has hired a spin doctor to divide the guild against itself and the public, all signs point to the fact that this strike could go on for far longer.

I really hope this stupid strike stops soon. I am kinda supporting the networks, not much though 55/45 but still one of the two: GIVE IN!!! There destroying jobs causing people to go broke forcing them to loan money... I can see some nutjob sueing the writers guild because he is in over his head due to being without a job... And let's not forget, this is a great way to get rid of the new shows like Bionic woman, Chuck, Reaper...

I really do not watch network tv any more thanks to my collection of DVD. The only thing this might hurt are things that are going to be released next year after its setteled. The price of the DVD will go up. Like everything else.
But I havent watched regular tv in over 2 years.

the AMPTP are being greedy
they want to give pocket change to the writers to put the shows online when if they air on tv they get a much larger sum
if it wasn't for the writers the shows would suck give them the money and get back to making good shows
Posted 12/11/2007 10:04am
im still behind the wga especially since the shows i follow shouldnt be effected, if scrubs get shortened they do intened to come back and finish it off for a dvd release, lost will only be delayed not ruined and as for heroes, they can just wait it out for the next season to start filing (no matter how bad s2 is)

The sad thing is that this strike could have been avoided if the AMPTP was prepared to be reasonable... the writers aren't asking for all that much! If they won't negotiate amicability with the writers I expect they also won't negotiate fairly with the Directors and Actors guilds either. End result - Hollywood will be shut down before we know it.

Get off the greedy train and onto the sanity train before it's too late AMPTP! You will lose this fight either way, it's just a matter of time and time is lost money. The last strike cost half a billion dollars, this time I expect it to be much more.

Viewers should unite and stop watching reality TV - support the writers, make the "reality" ratings plummet to send a message to the AMPTP that we won't accept those shows as a substitute for high quality scripted shows like Heroes, Lost, 24, Battlestar Galactica and so many others that have been or will soon be affected by the strike.

These money grubbing Producers and Executives don't watch TV so they don't care about the viewers as long as they watch. This strike is going to make Cable Channel's ratings soar and then the networks are going to be all tore asunder when the viewers don't return after finding the cable shows way better.
Posted 12/11/2007 1:07am
i hope deal or no deal gets cancelled because of this strike
Posted 12/11/2007 1:06am
oh dang, hurry and give the writers what they want
I WANT HEROES AND DOLLHOUSE GRRRR
Posted 12/10/2007 9:44pm
for the past decade we've already been inendated with crap reality tv over good written shows anyway.

While the writers have good reason probably to strike, I am more and more seeing them as spoiled brats, and am starting to get angered at how they take their positions for granted, something there are more people than almost any other profession that would take their job at half their compensation if they were able to do the job.

Anyhow, i'm now fed up with all of them, thanks for making TV suck more than it already did due to writerless reality tv junk that both sides have let poison the airwaves.
Posted 12/10/2007 9:36pm
this sucks
Posted 12/10/2007 8:31pm
O well its been some relatively crappy TV lately anyway, maybe we need some new writers/ideas to get things moving again. I really don't feel bad for either side, the writers aren't exactly doing work that would merit more money to begin with... I'm just mad more reality crap will move in now.
Posted 12/10/2007 7:55pm
I would blame the strike on ruining Heroes but that happened pre-strike.... If it ruins the final season of Scrubs I'm going to be so disappointed... the WGA are completely right to want more for what they do... I don't understand how the AMPTP would even be affected if they gave into the demands. People warned me to stick to my Canadian shows and I didn't listen.

this is getting ridiculious this strike the way it seems won't be ending anytime soon it stinks to see these shows end shorter they need to start agreeing give them what they want they aren't even asking for a whole lot i want to see smallville go 22 episodes not 15 cause next season is suppose to be last for the show hopefully it won't go longer than 8 seasons because of the strike if it ends anytime soon
