Battlestar Galactica prequel gets thumbs-up from Sci-Fi; two-hour pilot will show creation of toasters...err, Cylons.

Creating the Cylons 101, coming to a television set near you.

Battlestar Galacti-geeks got a heap of good news yesterday during the Sci-Fi Channel's press confab in New York City. No, it's not another season of Battlestar Galactica--the upcoming fourth season is still its last--but it's almost as good.

Cylon Building Rule #1: Make 'em smokin' hot!

Cylon Building Rule #1: Make 'em smokin' hot!

The long-rumored BSG prequel Caprica is no longer rumor; it's science fact. [Editor's note: called it yesterday afternoon!] Fans familiar with Battlestar's "The Cylons were created by man" intro (well duh, have you seen Sharon and Number Six?) will finally get to see it happen. Sci-Fi has given the go-ahead on a two-hour Caprica pilot; if it's successful, it will likely be turned into a series.

Caprica, named after the giant rock that much of the Galactica crew called home before it was blown to smithereens by supersmart robots, will take place about half a century before the beginning of BSG. It will follow two rival families, the Adamas (sound familiar?) and the Greystones, as they compete with each other and make breakthroughs in robotics that ultimately lead to the creation of the Cylons, or "toasters" if you want to be derogatory.

Battlestar creators Ronald D. Moore and David Eick will produce the Moore-written pilot, with Friday Night Lights' director Jeff Reiner behind the camera. Sci-Fi has not announced a release date for the telefilm, but production begins this spring.

Head over to the Caprica showspace and let the discussions begin!

Its about time...I have been wondering since BSG stared how the heck they made people like toasters & the raiders!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!! BRING ON MORE SCI-FI

If you step back from BSG and really look at the character development and plot holes, the show is only sub-par...but for us science fiction fans, it's the only show in town. "Firefly" died because there was too much competition on the air. Star Trek series had not died yet. It is dead now so BSG filled the void. ATTN, BSG PRODUCERS...GET SOME HARDCORE SCI-FI WRITERS IN HOUSE AND QUIT BORROWING FROM THE IRAQ WAR AND THE ORIGINAL BSG SERIES!

I must agree with scissor-face; the more BSG stuff the better for me (:

I am intrigued to see how this pans out...yes, I hear the worry in some about a prequel, how prequels have failed in the past...but I think that this just *might* work if it is done right. Enterprise was done 100 ways of wrong as a Star Trek prequel, totally re-writing established cannon.

I'm really excited to hear about this. After watching Razor (fantastic!), any expansion on the characters and backstory sounds good to me.

There doing the same thing that STAR TREK did with going back words. If you all remember MOORE was part of that team as well. GO FIGURE!

How would it be possible to have Sharon and/or Caprica 6 considering that the Humans didn't know the cylons looked Human..? It will take a while for that to happen and it's likely we won't see any of the BSG characters until the end. Do you think they will show The first Cylon War and their exodus?

"but it's a shame there won't be any way that our favourite BSG actors can be in it seeing that the story takes place 50 years before BSG."

I'm with you there, but we still get Six and Sharon ^^, and who knows, we might even get our crazy doc with those two as well.

This is gonna be so badass.

w00t! I've been dreading the end of galactica, but now there will be something else to watch in its place.
Posted 03/20/2008 7:38am
That's good!

This is good news as far as the BSG fame goes; as a fan, I'm delighted. However, keeping in mind the somewhat declining audience numbers, the main question is: how do they expect to sell the show to a wider viewership? If they dont, I'm afraid it's one season at best. Fingers crossed.

Hell yeah.

It could be good... I'll watch and see, but it's a shame there won't be any way that our favourite BSG actors can be in it seeing that the story takes place 50 years before BSG. Starbuck wasn't even born then.

David Eick should make a Sarah Corvus spin-off of Bionic Woman.
Posted 03/20/2008 2:52am
You know what, this might not sound that great, but I'll put more faith in a spin-off than a remake any day. A spin-off of a remake, hmm, has that ever been done before?
Posted 03/19/2008 9:42pm
i cant wait how cool is this
Posted 03/19/2008 7:55pm
When?!
Posted 03/19/2008 7:41pm
Meh. Doesn't sound as good as Galactica. I probably won't watch. Caprica 6 and Sharon aren't my favorite characters. I'll probably read about it, but doing a prequel for a series that's ending after four seasons is just asking for a bomb.
Posted 03/19/2008 6:08pm
meh
Posted 03/19/2008 6:02pm
Interesting news. I'm glad to see that Ronald Moore is taking a hands-on role with the pilot after all. The news stories from last year implied that he would not be involved on a day-to-day basis.

I'll be watching the BSG Top Ten on David Letterman tonight but not because Tigh might be naked. (Sorry, April. I think I'd rather see Sharon or Caprica Six or Tory. )

Posted 03/19/2008 12:38pm
This is fantastic news!!!! Anyone else watching David Lettermen tonight when the cast of BSG do the 10 ten reasons why you should watch Battlestar Galactica. Already saw the promos and Col. Tighe answers, "Because you might see me nekkid!" For those of you who don't know or watch, Col. Tighe is the crotchey eye-patched pirate like second in command. So excited!
