Stopgap writers'-strike solutions from NBC-owned USA Network taken off schedule; Office block to replace them.

Remember the writers' strike? That thing that happened last year with all the picketing, arguing, and nonwriting? It's all over now, but during the height of the work stoppage, networks had to get a little creative to keep their schedules afloat.

One of the more logical solutions some took was to appropriate a few shows from their stable of cable channels and repurpose them for prime-time network broadcasting. CBS did it with Showtime's Dexter, and NBC did it with USA Network's Monk and Psych.

Now that the strike is over, networks can stop these experiments and get back to business. NBC is pulling Monk and Psych from their Sunday-night time slots, according to an updated schedule released by the network. Replacing the two shows will be a two-hour block of The Office, at least for the next two weekends.

The move isn't surprising, given both Monk and Psych didn't post good numbers and NBC's unabashed love affair with The Office.

Psych and Monk are currently between seasons and are expected to return with new episodes on the USA Network this summer.

Their "numbers" are like election polls: how come I'm not polled?? If Monk and Psych were aired on NBC, I know a host of people who would have watched them. There was no advertising. I don't get cable so I have to wait until USA remembers to put it on their website.

hmmm...well I didn't know NBC was showing Monk and Psych, but I watch those shows on USA and I think they are better than the Office. NBC isn't looking to good for me right now, but it should be better in the fall if Heroes returns and any other good shows. I will have cable on the college campus so I should actually be able to see NBC super clear for once lol.

What kind of numbers are "not good"?

Psych started out a little bit silly, but it's gotten so much better as it's progressed! I thought the supermodel episode was their best yet--really good balance of plot and character. I wish/hope they'll continue some of the plots introduced in that episode. As for NBC, clearly idiots.

Wow NBC sucks. The Office isn't good at all and after what they did to Scrubs, Monk and Psych was all that was left. Now they have nothing good (with the exception of Fear Itself which is "ok")

Psych is now my favorite TV show since they killed Dead Zone. I used to love Monk... haven't seen it in a while, but I still think it's a good show. And I've seen The Office a few times -- it's okay. Not that funny, imo. Psych is way better. They need to make more than just 16 episodes of Psych a year.

People who think Psych's characters are unlikable are nuts! They aren't supposed to be typical characters' that's why it's a good show. Shawn is obnoxious; his dad is an emotionless ex cop. And then there's Gus, who just has issues. It's a fun show to watch because it is ridiculous. And besides, since when are the characters from The Office likable???

I have really enjoyed The Office but it has suffered this season for sure. It just hasn't been as consistently funny. However, for the record, Psych IS CONSISTENTLY funny. It is always fun to watch whether the eps are original are repeats. My son and I love the show - and so does my 60 year old mother. It's hugely clever and funny and filled with all sorts of pop culture references. Monk has been a show we've really enjoyed as well but we've lost some of our interest in it over the last year or so. It isn't quite as good as it used to be. But for the person that stated that Psych relies on cruel humor [or however you put it] - take another look at The Office. It has it too.

Ok, here's why one is better than the other. Monk has an unusual, clever premise. The show "follows through" on it very well. The characters are all rather likeable (to varying degrees), and there is a decent (if facile) plot that is entertaining. Psych has a more predictable premise, not as fresh, and not at all well followed through. The characters are UNlikeable, and much of the program rests on an "appreciation" of an unlikeable character and his VERY unlikeable ways. I think this is also the major difference between shows that appeal to Gen Y and Z 'ers and Baby Boomers. The more "smart-aleck" (to use an old term), a show's characters are and the more dependennt of "humor-with-a-wide streak of cruelty" and "so-there-bad-attitude", the more GenY & Z'ers seem to like it; and the more we Baby Boomers grit our teeth until it becomes unbearable. Psych is definitely in this category, as is The Office. In fact, NBC seems to be staffed exclusively by folk of the Gen Y & Z groups. They're willing to keep a few authentic dramas in their lineup (either broadcast or cable), but they don't really understand the attraction. They are much more "into" so-called reality shows (which exploit trickery and contrived conflict and are deeply mean-spirited at their roots), and comedies of the same ilk. I think it's time the networks stopped trying to be all things to all people and simply divided up the playing field, choosing which audience they wished to address and then airing shows that met that audience. (I mean, what IS wrestling doing on USA, TNT, or, god-help-us, the SCi-fi channel, anyway?) Move ER and MEdium (and resurrect some of the early 2007 season dramas that never had a chance) into their own network along with the Law & Order franchise and the original CSI (Vegas). Keep ALL the so-called reality shows and "new" comedies together on NBC. The same goes for CBS and ABC, along with their cable offspring.

Monk was great back in the early seasons. Then after Tony Shaloub gained more control, it was just an excuse for him to do endless comedy sketches about OCD. The crimes took second place to the comedy and nowadays you just have a choice of 2 suspects. Psych has always been bad. The whole fake psychic premise is shaky at best and from the off it's always been a gimmick for him to solve a crime in a funny way. At least with Monk, the OCD was the reason why he could solve mysteries. Psych is a pretentious show, while Monk was a genius show that's decended into pretentiousness. As for The Office US, I'm from the UK. So obviously, I'll pick the original just because I click with it since I identify with it a lot with my job. If Monk had been given a boost from cable early on I think it would have fared better, but I can see why it hasn't done great due to screenings of the later years instead.

The Office is my favorite show, but I think that 2.5-3 hours of Office every week is way too much for most people. I already watch my Office DVDs all the time anyway!

Of course, they didn't do too well, they've aired more than a few times on cable. What did they expect?

Thank God. Remember when NBC Sunday was the best thing ever (Law and Order: CI, Crossing Jordan, American Dream)? Monk and Psych post good ratings on a cable network where if they have 3 million viewers, it is strong, but 3 million viewers on a national network station, did someone say Joey? Good move by NBC but I would prefer it that Criminal Intent moved back to NBC and they put some good dramas OR they could repeat old episodes of old drama shows - they do it all the time with SVU and regular L & O. Why not reair early episodes of ER or Medium or first season of, dare I even say it, Lipstick Jungle? Sometimes I think I could do a better job at program scheduling.

It did not take very long for NBC to change their sunday night line up again. I thought it was cool that they put Monk and Psych on because it was something different. so much for being different, they are going to kill the Office

I Prefer The Office over both Psych and Monk mainly because of character relations (ok so i'm a sucker for Jim and Pam) and because I like the type of humor that embarrasses me when I'm watching (No Michael don't stand up to Stanley... Oh my God I can't watch).

I probably like the Office a bit more than Monk, and both a bit more than Psych. But come on! Isn't one or two eps a week of the Office enough? NBC just isn't a very good network any more. ABC has been where it's at for the last 4 seasons at least. They're even in negotiations to pick up Scrubs and Old Christine--smooth move!

Well for those of us who already watched the episodes of Psych and Monk on USA when they were actually 'original', this is ho-hum news. We all know NBC loves The Office even though its results have not exactly knocked the socks off the competition either. (I just love the BBC version so much better. Sorry.)

I am not surprised by this, but am disappointed. I love Monk and Psych and thought having them get more publicity would be good. I don't dislike Office, but it will be "jumping the shark" very soon. It is way over broadcast and ratings are becoming less than flattering for a show that is so hyped up. I haven't watched it since the 2nd season. It just isn't the best way to spend my half hour... but now it's not a good way to spend my 2 and a half hours on NBC! Oh well.

They should do a rebroadcast of the comedy block (My Name is Earl, Scrubs, The Office, 30 Rock) from Thursday. It seems to me like the perfect opportunity to cull new viewers.

I like The Office a lot, but they are going to KILL the show with it being on so much. And as well as it is received critically, the ratings are so lackluster. So in other words, NBC is just giving up on Sundays. So did it save them money by taking those two shows off that network? Because their numbers will not be much better with this change.
