The View, Really?

Who cay-ahs? We do. Sort of.

Not that the Emmy Awards really mean much--an awards bestower that never gave a single one to best-show-ever The Wire doesn't earn a lot of respect--but every year we hope that some light switch will be turned on and things will change. Alas, last night's Daytime Emmy Awards once again let us down. How? By giving an award to the damn View.

The award was for Best Talk Show Host, which means people like Sherri Shepherd and shrill little titmouse Elisabeth Hasselbeck have been singled out, on live national television, for doing the best job out of all their daytime talk show peers at saying interesting words and being informed and nimble interviewers. Which, no.

The other nominees weren't exactly heavyweights--Ellen, Regis & Kelly, and Rachael Ray--but all The View really does is let five women yell at each other for an hour, sometimes while a sad and befuddled celebrity sits sandwiched between them on a couch, looking miserable. If the award was given for stirring up the biggest and silliest controversy, the gang is certainly good at that. But when someone like Ellen DeGeneres (who's won the thing many times in the past) can be wise and warm and funny and also manage to say interesting things, why toss the golden ball-holder instead to the kind of loudness-above-all-else TV strategy that has permeated so many host-driven programs these days?

Maybe because, yes, the women are good at what they do. But what they do isn't good! And that should matter more. We wish that, for all the vapid warm air on daytime TV, there was at least one topical show that managed to be both funny, entertaining, and smart. Like, all at the same time. You know, more topical than Ellen, but with a lot more infotainment value than the midday local news. Basically what The View aspires to be (especially since their "Hot Topics" section started to get popular and more circus-y) but usually falls ludicrously short of. (Maybe the award was for Best Effort?) Then again, Tyra Banks won an Emmy last night for being "informative," so maybe we oughta just consider the whole daytime TV thing a complete wash.

For their part, the View ladies all seemed to assume that, yet again, they wouldn't win, so no one was even there to accept the award. Which is kind of funny. And also kind of sad.

What do you think? Are you a fan of The View's incessant yakking?

If Joy would shut up.........the most annoying women on TV I swear...Barbara I have lost total respect for and I used to think she was tops...now she just acts like she doesn't have a brain.....Sherry never knows what she is talking about but tries sometimes and just makes her look ridiculous as she can never keep up......Elizabeth is losing ground because she lowers herself to argue with Joy who doesn't agree about anything anyway...........Whoopi is the best one and I'd watch a show anytime with her.....for them to get an award over Ellen confuses me as Ellen gives and gives and gives to the public and makes people happy and feel good about themselves....she cracks me up with some of the under dogs of the world....Paris comes to mind...they are a riot together..........she is fresh everyday and doesn't have to talk about politics or argue with everyone she meets like that annoying Joy. Sooo should I tell you how I really feel.................moreless

@equalizer ".i'd find something i do enjoy watching and not spew all the negative energy their sorry lives must be filled with."goodness, that's not spewing negative energy AT ALL!!!!

Love the show ...i find it entertaining ..sure they argue ..they have different points of ...View ..last i checked this was America and the haters can turn the lazy dial if they can put down the bag of chips and reach the remote. Why the negative posters come out of the woodwork, when if i dont like something ...i'd find something i do enjoy watching and not spew all the negative energy their sorry lives must be filled with.

Over the summer I have been suckered into watching the View with my mom, and I have to admit that I do find it funny, sometimes, so I can't sit here :) and mock it, but I defidently think that people like Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who just generally shouldn't talk ever, should not win an emmy for the show, because lets face it, it's not like you can truely understand what they are talking about when they are talking/yelling at the same time.

I hadn't watched the Daytime Emmys in years... now I know why. Between Tyra (her lame attempt at an inspirational acceptance speech made me laugh... esp when she got played off by the music) and The View (Elizabeth Hasselbeck is just embarrassing, can't believe she wasn't there) and the 500 self-congratulatory standing ovations with heartfelt tears in the soap stars' eyes... it was not an enriching experience. However, at least they honored Sesame Street and used part of the show to highlight the continuing grim situation in Africa.

Amen Richard! I feel like I am trading on my gender when I agree, but frankly, all this show does is reinforce a negative female stereotype. (see my review). I used to hope that most people could see past it and might not lump all women in this category, but when this forum is awarded an Emmy...well, it might lend credence where none is due. **heavy sigh**This is why I don't pay much attention to any of the awards shows. The real talent is never nominated because depth is just too...you know...hard!

Why are the Jonas Brothers and Hanna Montana/Miley Cyrus famous? Neither can sing. Why are Lauren Conrad. Heidi Montag, and Spencer famous? They do nothing but act like idiots. Yes, this is an Are You Serious?! moment, but with all the popular reality crap that's on TV, I guess eventually it would happen.
