I was really looking forward to seeing Joseph Gordon-Levitt host and Dave Matthews Band perform on Saturday Night Live this past weekend. They comprise my modern-day dream team—though, if I may dream, I'd like to see Joaquin Phoenix perform both roles. Tell me that wouldn't be epic.
Anyway, anticipation. It happened. But so did complete dissatisfaction, with the exception of Dave Matthews' uncharacteristic (and hilarious!) cameo as Ozzy Osbourne. The rest of the show just underlined the embarrassingly low quality of the season thus far. Sure, JGL did a few kickass back-flips in his opening monologue. The man is talented. His skills are impressive. Hell, I'm practically in his fan club.
But his ham-tastic, acrobatic homage to "Singin' in the Rain" was just... out of place. It's SNL. Isn't everything supposed to be funny? I didn't find it funny. It just seems like JGL wanted to perform the number, so Lorne Michaels let him do it.
It's not like SNL is overflowing with ideas this season, anyway. Ninety percent of the skits last three to five minutes longer than they should. Kenan Thompson rarely plays male characters. Fred Armisen rarely plays anyone other than President Obama. And last week's fart jokes? I admit January Jones was a terrible host, but she wasn't exactly working with genius material. Neither was Gordon-Levitt—for some unexplained reason, the writers decided to exploit his mediocre singing voice in every skit.
Really? Really? That's the best you could do, SNL? We expect a little slowdown after 35 years, but comedians are only as funny as the material they perform.

SNL has been going down hill since the mid 90's when they started letting cast members stay on for 10+ years instead of rotating out the cast like they did for 20 years. IMO they need to do what they did back in the mid 80's and fire everybody and start again fresh. oh, and they also need to quit dipping so much into politics and get back to the off the wall skits that made the show so great!
I felt like JGL had some sort of illegal substances in his system that whole show. He was way too hyper for me to believe.
unfortunatelly I have to agree :/ without Amy ant Tina this isn't the same...
