Three Rivers Left Out to Dry

by Tim Surette TV.com Staff Writer 12/01/09 12:00 PM
Three Rivers Left Out to Dry
Look to the right. Look to the left. One of these shows won't be here in two weeks.

If only Alex O'Loughlin had remained a vampire—a sexy organ-transplanting Dr. Vampire!—we wouldn't be talking about this. The Moonlight hunk couldn't save medical drama Three Rivers from dying on the operating table, and as a result, CBS has pulled the show from its schedule.

Of course this doesn't mean the show is outright canceled, but keep in mind that networks will rarely come out and say they've killed a program. Three Rivers has been on Death Watch for a while now, and our best guess is that it's done overall but may get the opportunity to finish out its 13-episode order later. If it's lucky.

CBS had high expectations for Three Rivers, hoping it would end the network's search for a successful show that isn't an acronym-d procedural drama or spinoff of an acronym-d procedural drama. A hit medical drama continues to evade the network, and as long is CBS keeps ignoring my Vampire General Hospital pitch, the doctor drought will continue.

In the meantime, Three Rivers will be replaced by reruns of NCIS: LA, Criminal Minds, and Cold Case over the next three weeks.

  • I kept thinking that Three Rivers was just preempted by some of the special programming. However, I have now learned that it has been canceled. That is too bad. I looked forward to seeing this program every Sunday. The message about organ donor programs is a very important message to convey. The regular characters were real, professional, and interesting. I am truly disappointed that Three Rivers will not be airing on Sundays and that I am left with reruns when a fine program was canceled. I speak for myself and several friends.

  • please bring back Three Rivers. It is such a good show and I like it because it's not like the other shows about doctors and drama. It really caught my eye when I first watched it and I thought it was very interesting. Please reconsider your decision about taking it off the air.

  • please please bring back Three Rivers, I hate all the crime on tv and this was very entertaining and educational, not to mention that looking at Alex was hard. First they get rid of Moonlighting, then they get rid of Three Rivers. It was my favorite new show and very dissapointed.

  • Please, please reconsider scheduling this fine program. Not only are the stories interesting in themselves, they offer so much positive information about the benefits of being an organ donor. It is truly a worthwhile program on many different levels. Each week's episode brought a tear to my eye and reinforced my decision to be an orgon donor. jblainebaker

  • add a comment I hope they have a change of heart. So many shows have no meaning much less heart ,it's almost to the point that I almost stop watching anything and when I do like something it's canned I guess people like me we'll just have to keep watching old shows and old movies that have heart and meaning. The networks just seem to put out their trash and think it's the way to go.That's okay I'll just don't have to feed on trash so I just change the channel

  • Too bad I will only be able to see Three Rivers streaming online at http://bit.ly/47So1Q I can't believe this show has been canned already!

  • Best new show in YEARS! Big mistake, CBS!

  • This just bites. This was the one show that I enjoyed on a Sunday evening (Canadian TV). Sunday has the absolute worst line up and you would think that it would be one of the best since most like to sit back and chill before starting a hectic week. But no! Other days of the week have a multitude of shows that are great and on at the same time. My DVR gets a workout that's for sure. Bring back Three Rivers, Trauma, and do not chop Mercy...gritty, interesting shows. Grey's anatomy has bit the dust as far as I'm concerned.

  • They didn't leave us hanging for the next episode. Each episode was neatly wrapped up and with warm smile. That's why I think it didn't make it.

  • Once again CBS done something STUPID! I'm so pissed off at this moment; you guys don't have any idea!!!!! You fools don't know an AWESOME show like Three Rivers. Get out of that brain freeze and smell the coffee....you guys are just plain IDIOTS!!!

  • I'm sorry for all of the fans that liked this show. I never watched it, but have to say I am happy it failed. I was a big fan of another show that CBS cancelled that was actually getting good ratings and I think it is justice that one of the new shows they decided would be better has failed. I really hope the same thing happens to The Good Wife and NCIS:LA.

  • Transplant some writers if this is the diagnosis, but don't let this patient die because of your narrow-mindedness. People love the show because it offers real hope in what are potentially real situations. Why do you think the most lowly of us blindly sign donor agreements on our driver licenses, if for no other reason, than to help others? Beyond our personal existance, at least we may die with some semblance of potential heroism and worth? Basically, you''re throwing away an inspirational (OK, feel-good) show. Give it a second thought, huh?

  • Hey telvisnostic, Totally Agree this one and Trauma had potential

  • What The Heck is going on.. NBC Cancelled Trauma, Three Rivers is Gone to the Unios List Wating for A Time Slot.. Now What.. is there no good medical show out there.. Grey's has to much who is sleeping with who and who is gay or not gay on the show.. House is more humor and quick wit then Medical.. but I don't mind that too much.. A Huge House Fan.. Mercy is on the table hoping to live.. now what that just leaves us with Scrubs.. What is ER the only good Medical Drama or Comedy that can do any good.. time to bring back ER Spin off and Call it "The Carter Centre" Now the new Scrubs.. lets hope Something Medical Survives.. Greys like I said before is too much of Who is Sleeping With Who.. and I loved that show until it became more about that and what actor was going and who was staying.. ABC Wake Up Cancel that show too. Just One Mans Opinion

  • Taking Three Rivers off is a huge mistake. I cannot wait for the next week to roll around to see what is next. CBS you are making a big mistake. Keep our shows clean and full of what is real and not all the killings and crime you put on t.v. anymore. I remember growing up to family shows not ones that teach kids how to kill, thats what is wrong with this country today, get with it and bring Three Rivers back full swing each week, this fan will watch and alot more too.

  • I like that show. It needs to stay on. I don't know why they're cancelling it.

  • This is a great show. I think the downfall was almost every week, it did not come up at the time it was suposed to. I think football ran too long. I would have never gotten to see it, if I did not have a DVR.

  • THEY NEED TO KEEP THREE RIVERS ON I THINK IT IS A GREAT SHOW!!!!

  • Note to CBS; Make some money and be kind to your viewers! Throw all the remaining episodes on a DVD and let us view the remainder of the Season!

  • The show had potential.

  • Personally, I liked the show and it even made me cry once...a tough thing to do. It didn't hurt that it is also set in my hometown, which I always find cool in shows and movies.

  • Please don't cancel this show. We watch mostly comedies (two and a half men is our favorite) and almost no dramas. We live in the Pittsburgh area and love picking out familiar places and the story lines are very good. The show is great--please keep it going

  • It seems CBS has not had any luck with doctor shows

  • add a comment Three Rivers is one of my favorite shows. I am strongly urging and requesting that you bring it back. I know many people that watched it every Sunday. You have a good and solid show in Three Rivers.

  • When will CBS realize that its Sunday line up is in jeopardy because they refuse to adjust their schedule for football. The games go over every Sunday. Yet 60 minutes doesn't get pre-empted and everything is in delay, sometimes up to an hour. Easy fix, schedule 60 minutes at 8, Amazing Race at 9 and Cold Case at 10. If the game ends early, rerun a Monday night sitcom at 7:30. Sorry Tres Rios.

  • The stories were quite lame. the problem was not the actors but the story lines were too trite and not relateable. i mean why have several angles in an episode when all are lame . why not have one theme and make a great story of it?

  • Poor O'Loughlin! It seems like he can't get cast in a show that sticks! :(

  • Poor Alex O'Loughlin!

  • How very sad. This is a great show!

  • CBS finally has some fairly decent prime time shows and they are cancelled. This is very dishearteningl Three Rivers has been well written and well acted. What a shame!

  • Sorry to see this cancelled, but please quit knocking the "acronym'd" shows just because they're doing well.

  • I LOVE this show! This is absolutely terrible news.

  • oh well . never watch it and i like moonlight~

  • I have been waiting for them to rebroadcast the pilot, I missed it for some reason. If CBS would put their programs online.I could catch up, now I will have to wait for it to be released on DVD.

  • I love this show. Several friends and I are RN's and we think this is a great program. One of the few that doesn't portray all nurses as sex fiends, and always has a quality theme. And in this series, we have a doctor that is caring and loves his patients. There is no violence, foul language nor sex. So sure, take off a good program with morals. Why not????? Add a little dirt, and of course it would be a hit.

  • The show probably would have done much better in a different timeslot. That's sad. I hope we see Daniel Henney on more tv shows in the near future. He's so dreamy.

  • Oh that stinks. I really liked this show. Oh well, I'm not that surprised either.

  • good!! so many expectations and so far has not quite lived up to it. I'd love to see Katherine Moennig in a decent show. She well deserves it!! ooh good old L-word times...

  • Poor Alex O'Loughlin, he needs to get on a hit show soon. He's a pretty decent actor, just can't seem to catch a break.

  • Not surprised..

  • Well CBS can bring back Moonlight now that vampires are popular. That last comment was wishful thinking on my part.

  • the reason is becasue it was never on the right time football always screwed up the schedule so Three rivers was never on at 9 like it was sussposed to be

  • I saw it once and it was a pretty good show.

  • I'm not surprised.

  • I love this series and I'm sooooo fed up with getting hooked on something I like and the networks cancelling it. It keeps happening to me. I guess either I have no taste or the networks don't and I KNOW I have taste

  • Yeah I had a feeling this would happen. I watched Three Rivers and the last few episodes have been pretty strong, it just wasn't a well thought out series. Plus CBS putting anything on Sundays is a waste of time. They're always pre empting. It sucks. Hopefully Katherine Moennig can find herself on a hit show soon.

  • Three Rivers is bad. Period. However, had CBS recognized the hit they had in Moonlight, (and that they would now be WAY ahead of the trend), when they had the chance, we would not now be having this discussion. If they want to finds shows like they used to back in the day, that aren't "acronym-d procedural drama or spinoff[s] of an acronym-d procedural drama", then perhaps they need a more open-minded executive??? I can think of one or two to replace...

  • Reruns? The show is much better than watching reruns. If they have ready new episodes they will generate more audience than reruns.

  • Well, the show was pretty bad when it was on TNT and called Heartland in 2007... But it is nowhere near as bad as NCIS:LA!

  • Reruns, for god's sake.
