A houseboat docked across the street from the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach serves as the headquarters for the detective agency SurfSide 6. Lawyers Dave Thorne and Ken Madison run the investigative service. With help from their playboy friend Sandy Winfield, owner of the yacht next door, Daphne Dutton, and hotel lounge singer Cha Cha O'Brien, they chase the bad guys and solve crimes...when they can take time out from romance!

Dave Thorne (Lee Patterson) is a Korean War veteran who served as an assistant D.A. in New York before heading to the sun of Miami. Ken Madison (Van Williams) got his training in New Orleans (as shown in the series Bourbon Street Beat, which aired the year before SurfSide 6 began). Sandy Winfield (Troy Donahue) worked on Wall Street before quitting to go live the playboy life in Florida. Socialite Daphne Dutton (Diane McBain) sees the three frequently since her yacht is moored next to their office, but is not the romantic interest of any of the detectives. Cha Cha O'Brien (Margarita Sierra) provides entertainment in the Boom Boom Room across the street at the Fontainebleau -- and occasionally provides assistance in a case as well. The detectives keep the Miami Beach police lieutenants Ray Snedigar (Don "Red" Barry, season one) or Gene Plehn (Richard Crane, season two) informed when the encounter criminal activity.less «

  It is with great sadness that I post the death of SurfSide 6 star Lee Patterson. Patterson died after an illness on February 14, 2007. He was 77. His death, for some reason, was not made public until October 23rd. Born in Canada, Lee Patterson had several movie and guest-starring roles under his belt when he was cast as senior partner Dave Thorne in SurfSide 6 opposite beefcake heartthrobs Troy Donahue (who died in 2001) and Van Williams (one of two surviving cast members -- the other is Diane McBain). The series lasted two seasons. Patterson continued in movies (he had a brief role in Airplane! II - The Sequel ) and TV series, moving to soaps in the late 60s when he was cast as Joe Riley on One Life to Live . After 11 years on the show, his character was killed off (in typical soap opera fashion); however, he returned to the series a couple of years later playing Riley's previously-unknown twin brother (which is also typical soap opera fashion).   After a number of years on the "baby boomer" American Life Network, SurfSide 6 is no longer airing. The Monday night line-up that featured SurfSide 6 and numerous other "sister" shows ( Bourbon Street Beat and Hawaiian Eye ) has been replaced with classic comedy shows such as WKRP in Cincinnati , The Mary Tyler Moore Show , and The Bob Newhart Show . The best-known and original of the William Orr detective dramas, 77 Sunset Strip , still airs on Monday. If they should show the two-part episode "The Hot Tamale Caper," which featured two SurfSide 6 characters, it will be posted here. Farewell to SurfSide 6 on American Life. less «
