This collection of twist-in-the-tail stories of suspense, horror and black comedy (in the early seasons, all by Roald Dahl) was filmed by Anglia Television, a regional production company in the East of England.

Each episode stands alone and has its own cast, and for two seasons each was introduced by Dahl himself from a fireside arm-chair. He took a back seat when most of the stories coming forward were based on the work of other writers.

Tales of the Unexpected was an instant hit. It ran for nearly ten years, clocking up a total of 112 episodes, and in the UK it is still being repeated. Anglia sold the series to more than eighty other countries, and all episodes are now available on DVD as well as VHS.less «

  Does anyone know which episode this was??? There are so many to check, it's almost impossible from the link: http://epguides.com/TalesoftheUnexpected/ All the information that was found is from the Internet, with other people searching for the same episode? Info: The other episode that still gives me the willies featured Roy Thinnes as a reporter who is steadfastly opposed to the death penalty. A plan is hatched between Thinnes and a prison official to allow him to go undercover on death row as an inmate. While there though, a guard who knows who Thinnes really is (and bears a grudge against him) switches his prison uniform so that the reporter's clothes now bear the number of an inmate set to be electrocuted. In what must be the performance of his career Thinnes is absolutely "electrifying" as he desperately tries to get everyone to realize the mistake that's been made- but of course, who would believe the ravings of a death row inmate, right? So, he is dragged out of his cell kicking and screaming like an animal and strapped into the awaiting chair. Every single second of this heart pounding struggle is riveting to watch, right to the black cloth mask being placed over his face and the switch being thrown- ((Spoiler Alert)) and then prison officials and the guard who set him up step out from behind the scenes. They inform Thinnes that this has all been concocted to show him what a condemned man really goes through. They're all opposed to capital punishment and want him to continue in is crusade to end the death penalty. The conniving guard is even the one who unties the straps. But when he removes the death mask, in an absolutely bone chilling moment of revelation the guard finds himself looking into the staring, lifeless eyes of a corpse.   Tales of the Unexpected looks very old-fashioned now, but that is all part of its charm. After twenty years or more, it's still around on channels in many parts of the world: a tribute to Roald Dahl and the other writers and producers of this major show of suspense and mystery.
  
  All of the early episodes were based on stories by Roald Dahl himself. As the years went by, original stories by a host of other 'twist-in-the-tail' writers were used, but they were always substantially re-worked by the producers at Anglia. Not only were the names of characters changed, sometimes even the plot itself was recast.
  
  Tales of the Unexpected is out there on DVD as well as VHS video-tape, so it's going to be around for anyone who wants it for a long time to come. Classic show, period piece, well worth keeping around.
