For more than a quarter century in the music business, Tanya Tucker has proven herself as one of the true legends in country music. With 30 albums to her name, Tucker has traveled many roads since growing up in Seminole, Texas. A pre-teen sensation, Tanya had been performing since the age of eight with Mel Tillis. In 1969, her family moved with her to Las Vegas so she could perform. Here, she got the attention of Columbia Records, who signed her to her first deal. In 1972, she released her version of the song "Delta Dawn" when she was just 13. The song subsequently rose to No. 6 on the country charts.
By 1973, Tucker made it to the top of the charts with "What's Your Mama's Name." This was followed by two more No. 1 songs, "Blood Red and Goin' Down" and "Would You Lay with Me (In a Field of Stone)." After leaving Columbia, she continued to produce hits for her new label, MCA, throughout the '70s. The '80s saw Tucker sign with Arista Records (1982), where she did not find much success. After jumping to Capitol Records in 1985, she landed four No. 1 songs and reclaimed her spot among country's elite.
With a booming national interest in country, the '90s have proved very fruitful for Tucker. In 1991 she was named the Country Music Association's (CMA) Female Vocalist of the Year; in 1993 she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame's Walkway Of Stars and won Country Music Television's (CMT) Female Video Artist of the Year; in 1994 she earned Grammy nominations for Best Female Vocalist and Vocal Collaboration on "Romeo" with Kathy Mattea, Dolly Parton and Mary Chapin Carpenter; also in 1994, she sang at the halftime festivities for Super Bowl XXVIII and at the World Cup Opening Ceremonies.
Tucker's 30th album, Complicated, was released in March 1997 on Capitol, at the same time she released her autobiography, "Nickel Dreams."
