Meg Liberman and Marc Hirschfeld were nominated for an Artios Award (given by the Casting Society of America, USA) for "Best Casting for TV, Comedy Pilot" for this episode. (edit) Mila Kunis actually embellished her age at her audition, claiming that she would be 18 on her birthday, but did not specify how many birthdays away that was; she was fourteen at the time. According to the interview, the producers were very surprised when she told them she would need a set teacher because she was underage.
(edit) This is the only episode not directed by David Trainer. It is most likely due to the fact that when networks give shows the green light to film a pilot, they are not sure which directors they will have for the bulk of the season if the show is picked up. Therefore, this might explain why Terry Hughes directed only the pilot before they found their permanent director, David Trainer. (edit) There used to be a studio musician who worked for the jazz-rock duo Steely Dan named Jackie Kelso and they wrote a song called "The Fez." Coincidence? (edit) The working titles for the show included Feelin' All Right, The Kids Are Alright, Reeling in the Years and Teenage Wasteland. (edit)

Kitty: Well, the kids are off. I wonder where they went.
Red: Out of town.
Kitty: How do you know?
Red: I told them not to. (edit) Eric: If my dad catches me copping beers he'll kill me.

Reponse: This is a casual remark. It's said only days before Eric turns 17 and it's not strange for a person to refer to their age rounded up when your birthday is within a few days or weeks. (edit) In the scene where Eric steals two beers from the bar in front of Red, when Eric talks about getting the cruiser, he holds up two cans of beer: one is upside down and the other is not. In the next cut both are upside down. Note also that the people in the background changes between the cuts. (edit)

After the opening credits, the gang is watching The Brady Bunch on TV. The Brady Bunch was a weekly half-hour show which originally ran from 1969 to 1974, and then was syndicated. (edit) Kelso (referring to Todd Rundgren): He's no Frampton.
