At age eighty-six, Hal Holbrook is the oldest man ever to be nominated for an Oscar. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Into the Wild. (edit) An ongoing writers strike nearly obliterated The 80th Annual Academy Awards. In December, The Writer's Guild went on strike, protesting that much of their work was being sold on DVD and for internet download without residuals going to the writers themselves. The strike lasted four months and in it's wake turned the Golden Globes from a star-studded three-hour event into a 30 minute show with two hosts naming off the winners. On the morning of the nominations, the question of whether or not the ceremony would take place depended upon the settling of the strike because no one wanted to cross the picket line to work on the show. Two weeks prior to the big night, it was finally settled and the event went on as planned. (edit)
