Jethro: Know what my teacher over at Potts’ School said about totin’ a rabbit’s foot?
Granny: What?
Jethro: She said it’s a “superstitious invocation contradicted by scientific knowledge.”
(The clan looks at each other and pauses)
Jed: Hmm. Always nice to know you ain’t been doin’ something foolish. (edit) (Granny asks Jed if she wants Elly to be an old maid, to which he says no)
Granny: Next year she’ll be too old to get a husband. She’s almost eighteen. (edit) (Jethro tells Jed and Granny that Sonny is at the pool with Elly)
Jed: I better get right out there and keep my eye on em.
Granny: Now you set still and leave those youngins’ alone. Can’t you remember how it was when you was a boy?
Jed: Yeah. I better get right out there! (edit) (Jane is trying to teach Jethro French, teaching him how to pronounce “Mademoiselle,” and Jed walks in on them pronouncing “Mah,” which sounds like kissing)
Jane: Try it again.
Jethro: Mmm-mah!
Jane: Well, that’s closer. Try again.
Jethro: Mmmmm-mah!
Jane: Once more.
Jethro: Mmmmm-mah!
Jed: Close in on her, Jethro! (edit) (Jane sees the love charm Granny made for Elly)
Jane: That is ludicrous, irrational, sophomoric, and pure hokum.
Granny: Ha! Ha! Ha! You didn’t even guess one ingredient. (edit)
