Jeff Stewart Injured
Actor Jeff Stewart has been involved in an "incident" at The Bill's Merton studios, according to the show's producers.
A spokesman for TalkbackThames said: "We can confirm an incident occurred following a meeting with Jeff, when it was discussed that Jeff's contract would not be renewed." It has been widely reported that Jeff went to his dressing room after the meeting, and slashed his wrists, before calling for help.
A spokesman for London Ambulance confirmed that they were called to an address at Deer Park Road, where The Bill is filmed, at around 1750 GMT on Tuesday. "We sent an ambulance and our staff treated an adult male and took him to hospital."
Jeff spent Tuesday night at St George's Hospital in Tooting, where he was kept under observation, but was released earlier today (Wednesday).
The spokesman for Talkback Thames added: "Our primary concern is for Jeff Stewart's welfare. We are doing everything we can to ensure Jeff is getting the help he needs, and would ask that his privacy is respected at this difficult time. All our best wishes are with Jeff."
The Bill's stars are all on rolling contracts. Jeff was suspended from work just before Christmas after reportedly directing a furious outburst at production staff during filming. It is speculated that the December incident contributed to the decision to release the actor on the expiry of his current contract.
