Episode Summary

Rated: TV-14-LV
When a gay man is murdered, seemingly the latest victim of a string of hate crimes, Brenda must confront prejudices inside and out of the LAPD. But when the perpetrator of the crimes turns out to be something quite different than expected, and has an alibi for the latest murder, Brenda must dig deeper to discover if this crime is part of the string, or a crime of passion disguised as a hate crime.

Meanwhile, Flynn and Taylor step up their efforts to undermine Brenda once again, but with unexpected effects, as the team begins to rally around Brenda. Provenza's quirks begin to emerge, and we meet Terrence Hynes, a County Coroner's Forensics Support worker with an odd sense of humor. On the home front, Brenda finds herself with some new charges when her (male) Kitty has kittens.

    meow, meow... hide show

Oh my god – it is Ricky Vasquez. He always plays the small gay roles in these shows. So hate crimes in Los Angeles – good theme to go with. I actually really liked the fact that this was given to Priority Murder. Hate crimes should be dealt with differently – the punishment is different. Oh my god – those were the cutest kittens ever. As soon as I say them I could care less what happened in the rest of the episode. I just wanted to cuddle with them all. Sweetness. The other thing that I got my attention was the gift that came in the little blue box. Wow.

Good times at catching Flynn out. It's about time! hide show

Flynn got caught as the back stabbing rat he is and Brenda totally calls him on it. It had plenty of Fritz in it for my tastes. I'm just a little pissy about Pope. You can totally tell now that he gave Brenda the job not only because she's the best, but also because he was hoping to reignite their affair. And with Fritz on the scene, there's no hope of that now, so he's getting vindictive, while still covering his butt. If there's any justice in the world, something bad needs to happen to that man and Brenda needs to wake up about him.

Character conflict needs to refocus, and get away from some people just being mean to others. hide show

Personally, I think the conflict between the characters is getting a little tiresome. Hopefully this will signal the end of the extreme arrogance and subversion of some of the main characters (ie. Taylor and Flynn). Some conflict makes for a good show, but I don't like watching complete assholes for an hour; the show is starting to suffer because of it.

On the upside, however, Fritz comes across as a great guy. He puts himself out a lot for Brenda, but he's not a pushover. Good thing in a man. I want her to express some more feelings for him, but I also like the fact that she resists it, because burgeoning love affairs always make better television than established ones.

Just a Note: In the previous reviews, I think we're supposed to substitute 'Taylor' or 'Flynn' for 'Gabriel'? I think you've got the wrong guy. How ironic ;)

Taylor and Johnson go head to head and leave Brenda's division some respect for her. hide show

In this episode, Brenda investigates the murder of a gay man and believes it to be a hate crime due to a supposed "gay basher" who has been stealing valuables from a gay community. As Brenda looks more into the case she discovers that it may not be a hate crime. However, Taylor thinks it is and attempts to ruin the case based on his beliefs.
In this episode, Brenda finally puts Taylor in his place after she solves the crime that surprisingly wasn't a hate crime but a "crime of passion". Because of Taylor's interference in the case, Brenda gets more respect from her division as you can see at the end of the episode when Brenda's leaving. Tao helps Brenda with her brinders, Sandchez helps her with her box full of kittens, and Provenza holds the door for her and the guys and looks at Taylor with a smug look.
All in all, a good episode.

  • Although Kitty's kittens are presumably only a day or two old, it is obvious that the kittens used in filming were quite a bit older, perhaps 4 or 5 weeks. First of all, they are a bit larger than 2-day old kittens. Secondly, the kittens in this episode have their eyes open and are walking around, but kittens do not open their eyes until they are 7-10 days old, and do not begin to walk until they are about 2 weeks old. Lastly, the kittens in this episode are quite fluffy, but newborn kittens generally have much less hair, if any. []
  • During the scene when Brenda meets Pope for a drink, the amount of wine in her glass changes from shot to shot. []
  • The small blue box Pope gives Brenda is from Tiffany and Co. jewelers. Among the most exclusive, and expensive, jewelers in the country, it specializes in platinum and silver jewelry set with stones. Gifts from Tiffany are readily identifiable by their characteristics blue box tied with a white ribbon. []

Better know as AB205, The California Domestic Partners Rights and Responsibilities Act of 2003, this law allows same sex-couples to register as domestic partners. By doing so, they are guaranteed a range of rights typically reserved to married couples, including community property rights, tax benefits, parental rights, and health-care rights. []
  • This is the first appearance by Robert Clendenin as Terence Hynes. Though never specifically identified, Hynes most likely works in the LA County Coroner's Forensic Support department. The Los Angeles County Coroner's office has its own forensics unit, handling a wide range of tasks including histology, gunshot residue analysis, DNA testing and postmortem toxicology. Forensic support includes preparation of bodies for autopsy, assistance during autopsy, and dental/fingerprint analysis for identification. []
  • Brenda: (Holding out a meowing pillowcase) The cat's sick.
Gabriel: You brought your cat to a crime scene?
Brenda: It's not my cat, it just lives with me and eats at my house. []
  • Provenza: (Handing out latex gloves) You might want to double up on your protective gear since this is a homocide.
Brenda: You seem to be having trouble with your pronunciation this evening. []
  • Pope: Where the h*** is she?! I'm waiting here and I've got a very pi**y state legislator in there.
Gabriel: She's having a personal crisis, Sir.
Pope: Yeah. It's called her life. [Scoffs] (Muttering) Personal crisis... []
