I don't know how I feel about Jon being up against Conan but Craig Ferguson would pick Jon to take over when Letterman steps down according to Broadcasting and Cable.

That's been suggested countless times by so many people and from what I hear, Jon always seemed to be flattered, but wouldn't do it, because it's a different sort of show. Yeah sure, there's the monologue which he is familiar with due to his comedic background and the interviews wouldn't be a problem either, but there are still differences in talking about and dealing with current, topical issues. Plus, I don't necessarily think he'd get away with some things at CBS that aren't much of a big deal on Comedy Central. He's always said he likes and respects the people he's currently working with, they work well together and to him it's not important "how far you're up on the dial" which I think is a really great statement. And finally, it's not like he's not successful with his show. He's won numerous awards, they've asked him twice to host the Oscar's etc.

When and if Letterman steps down. I've heard that he wants to go thirty years like Johnny Carson, so at the earliest Dave would retire in February 2012.

No matter what you think of Letterman, his job though and everything that comes with it does have its appeal...

Can I just say again and again how much I respect Jon Stewart! Here's another reason! Why leave somewhere where you enjoy your work, your coworkers? Ambition is great but not necessary to be happy.

Ditto. But there's no way Jon would take over for him. Jon needs freedom of expression, and Comedy Central offers that (within limits). CBS would be far too strict, and it would turn his job into something he doesn't really enjoy.
