Among the many fans of this series, I believe the first season of The Lucy Show was among its best and Lucy and Viv Put Up A TV Antenna was Lucy and Viv at their finest. hide show
Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance were the greatest female comedy team to hit television. The first 30 episodes of The Lucy Show, which comprise the first season of the classic series, were perhaps Lucy & Viv's finest moments together on television, bar none. I particularly fondly recall this episode as being one of their best moments together. They are at their comedic best, climbing around on the roof trying to put up a TV antenna. What I remember thinking was here were these two women, both in their 50s, and their ability to do physical comedy was impressive and astounding. They worked together liked a fine-tuned machine. Lucy was wonderful with Desi Arnaz and later, with Gale Gordon, but Lucy really was at her best with Vivian Vance. It was as if there were "no holds barred" and these two actresses took a script, really any script, and together made it gold. I am thrilled to know this series will soon be available on DVD, and I encourage anyone reading this, to purchase The Lucy Show on DVD to discover for themselves that Lucy and Viv together produced some of television best, most remembered moments.
Lucy & Viv install a TV antenea on top of their roof and hilarity ensues. hide show
Absolutely one of the best episodes of this series. Everyone knows the B&W first season is the best of the run, but this one has superb set pieces between Ball and Vance on the roof that makes this episode rival "Lucy and Viv Put in a Shower." And check out that great matte shot used for the pull-back shot of Lucy about to step off the roof of her home. Classic line: Lucy: "Back up, back up!"; Vivian: "I can see right down into my bedroom through this hole in the roof. I should have made my bed this morning." Hilarious.
