Notes

add »
Though credited, Phyllis Smith does not appear in this episode. (edit)
According to Jenna Fisher, it was purely coincidence that Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Joss Whedon directed this episode with a vampirism theme, but during the read-through the cast joked that no one would believe that. (edit)
They used four kinds of bats for the episode. The first being a live bat, then an animatronic bat, and followed by a motorized bat. For the last one, they had an imaginary bat in the trash bag in the scene where Dwight puts it in the bag. (edit)
California State University was used as the backdrop for Ryan's business school and Pam's art show. (edit)

Quotes

add »
Dwight: I don't have a lot of experience with vampires, but I have hunted werewolves. I shot one once, but by the time I got to it, it had turned back into my neighbor's dog. (edit)
Dwight: If a vampire bat was in the U.S., it would make sense for it to come to a "-sylvania"—like Pennsylvania. (edit)
Michael: So you want to start a business? How do you start? What do you need? Well, first of all, you need a building. Secondly, you need supply. (edit)
(Jim pretending he is affected by a bite from the bat)
Jim: Ow!
Karen: What happened?
Jim: That bread on your desk... I just picked it up. It's white hot!
Karen: But, Jim this garlic bread is cold.
Jim: No... it burned me. (edit)
Jim: So weird.
Dwight: What? What's so weird?
Jim: The bat, I mean I know I felt it bite me, but look, there's no mark.
(Dwight inspects Jim's neck)
Jim: I feel so tingly. (edit)

Trivia

add »
One of the students asks Michael about how Dunder Mifflin's Herfindahl Index has decreased since the merger. The Herfindahl-Hirschman Index is an actual economic measure of company size and competition within an industry. In the US, the Department of Justice will use this statistic as part of the decision to allow or deny a merger of companies. (edit)

Allusions

add »
When Michael in in front of Ryan's class, he begins his presentation by ripping out pages from another student's text book and telling them that they cannot learn from books and to replace those pages with 'life lessons'. The scene is one of the better remembered ones from Dead Poets Society. (edit)
The Teaching Company

Michael uses the music from the Teaching Company's tapes when entering the room to speak to Ryan's class. The Teaching Company uses audio tapes to teach classes. (edit)

"Silly"
Watching Dwight falling of Pam's desk yelling bat! is by far one of the most funny moments of The Office! Also, Michael is a great guy in the end.
