Remembering last year, Marge tries to hide the big annual chili cook-off from Homer. When he figures it out, she makes him promise not to drink any beer. Homer is known as the dude with the fireproof stomach and Chief Wiggum brews up some chili with Guatemalan insanity peppers, and it burns the hell out of Homer's mouth. He decides to put wax in his mouth, so he can eat the peppers whole. After eating a few, he begins hallucinating and Homer runs off into the sunset and experiencing a strange journey. The rest of the family leaves without him after he embarrasses them. On his journey, Homer meets a talking coyote who tells him to find his soul mate. He wakes up on a golf course and begins his search. Marge is upset with him, making him think it is not her. Homer ends up at a lighthouse, where Marge eventually finds him. Because she found him, he figures out that she IS his soul mate. A ship crashes at the lighthouse, leaving short shorts everywhere. Read full recap »

- When Marge turns around and screams "Don't soul mate me," for a few frames prior to the close-up, her teeth are drawn as jagged triangles, like those of a shark to heighten the sense of fear that her rage is meant to inspire. It happens very quickly and verges on subliminal. edit »
- An actual note from the Fox Censors regarding this episode: "To discourage imitation by young and foolish viewers, when Homer begins to pour hot wax into his mouth, please have him scream in pain so kids will understand that doing this would actually burn their mouths." edit »
- The plot for this episode appears on a collector card in level 1 of The Simpsons: Hit & Run video game. edit »
- The striped snake that Homer comes across and other parts of his hallucination parody Beetlejuice. edit »
- The computer in the lighthouse is a parody of a Twilight Zone episode, where a man in a cave turns out to be a computer. edit »
- In 2008, the fast food chain Carl's Jr arranged with 20th Century Fox to have this episode rerun in nine major markets in order to promote and tie in with its relaunch of its popular Chili Cheese Cheeseburger and Chili Cheese Fries food items to its menu. edit »
- Homer's hallucinations during Act II, as well as at the very end of Act I, in particular when his body becomes somewhat of a liquid state, were all originally drawn by David Silverman. edit »
- Blackboard Joke: None.
Couch Gag: Bart, Lisa, Maggie, and Marge parachute down from the sky onto the couch. Homer, however, falls flat on his face with an unopened parachute. edit »
- Homer: (After seeing Wiggum's chili with insanity peppers) Uh Wiggy, my chili's getting cold. edit »
- Homer: It's like you're from Venus-
Marge: -And you're from Mars.
Homer: Oh, sure, give me the one with all the monsters. edit » - Homer: But how did you find me?
Marge: Well, I was sure you'd be on foot, because you always say public transportation is for losers. And I was sure you'd head west, because Springfield slopes down that way. And then, I saw the lighthouse, and I remembered how you love blinking lights. Like the one on the waffle iron.
Homer: Or that little guy on the "Don't Walk" sign. edit » - Homer: Look, just give me some inner peace, or I'll mop the floor with ya! edit »
- Coyote: Clarity is the path to inner peace.
Homer: Well, what should I do? Should I meditate? Should I get rid of all my possessions?
Coyote: Are you kidding? If anything, you should get more possessions. You don't even have a computer. edit »
- "Quetzalzacatenango" or as some others spell it "Quetzlzacatenango", the name of the town where the insanity peppers come from seems to be a parody of "Quetzaltenango", which is the name of Guatemala's second largest city. edit »
- The animation during the beginning of Homer's hallucinations is based on The Beatles' film "Yellow Submarine" and Pink Floyd's film "The Wall". The Beatles are even referenced when Jasper says, "Goo goo ga-joob" when Homer approaches him. edit »
- Music from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly play when Homer goes up to Chief Wiggum's chili stand. edit »
- "Who wears short shorts?"
"We wear short shorts."
A popular novelty song from 1958, this #3 US hit made the underrated doo-rock group "The Royal Teens" a one-hit wonder. Later in the 1970s, this tune was used as a jingle for Nair, a hair removal cream, that was a must for anyone who dared to wear "short shorts" (i.e., hotpants). edit » - :
The song playing during Homer's journey to find his soul mate in the streets is the 1975 hit "At Seventeen" by Janis Ian. edit »
