Notes

add »
Karl Wiedergott was credited for this episode, but did not provide any character voices. (edit)
Blackboard Joke: None.
Couch Gag: A la the opening to western series Bonanza a map of Springfield is shown and the center of the map begins to burn. As the burning paper separates we see the family members riding up on their horses. The couch is nowhere to be found. (edit)

Quotes

add »
Accountant: You throw over one thousand dollars a month into local wishing wells.
Homer: Yeah, you idiot, 'cause I'm wishing for more money! (edit)
Abe: My roof, my rules!
Homer: Oh, why did I borrow that roof from him? (edit)
Lisa: Dad, don't throw rice, it makes the birds swell up!
Homer: Oh, Lisa, that's one of those rumors you get off the internet.
(Behind them, three birds explode)
Homer: Hey Selma? Want some rice? (edit)
Homer: (as Esteban) So, how long is senor Homer out of town for?
Marge: Ooh, I don't know, he might come home any minute…
Homer: Then I must flee! (jumps out the window and re-enters the room as himself) Where is he? Where is he? I smell his aftershave!
Marge: I don't think we're doing this right. (edit)
Lisa: Now we can enjoy Boxingham Palace in peace.
Bart: Want to melt it with a hose?
Lisa: Sure I guess, a couple of birds pooped on it over here. (edit)

Trivia

add »
Revealed in this episode: Marge still has a gambling problem and spends money on online poker every month, although she claims the site is merely "instructional." (edit)
This is the fifth time that Selma gets married. (edit)

Allusions

add »
Buckingham Palace
Lisa calls the box fort Boxingham Palace, which is a reference to Buckingham Palace. (edit)
Homer: Come on, Dad, I'm cuttin' back everywhere. To save gas, I'm Flintstone-ing the car.
Homer imitates Fred Flintstone's way of driving his caveman car by putting his feet below the car and running on the road. However, it's much more of a struggle as he heavily grunts and says Fred's classic catch phrase… Yabba----Dabba----Dooooo!!! (edit)
Bart: Who knew guys in brown shirts could cause so much trouble?
This is a joke about the uniform of the S.A soldiers who wore brown shirts . Most of the world community didn't realize the trouble the Nazis will cause until 1939 (the party rose to power in 1933). (edit)
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers:
The siege of Lisa and Bart's box fort is a direct homage to the siege of Helm's Deep in the second film of Peter Jackson's Tolkien trilogy. Bart and Lisa are outnumbered greatly and before the battle Bart even utters a dismissive comment along the lines of "Is this all you can summon Sauramon?" Nelson shows up at the last minute to provide much needed re-enforcements as do the Elves in the film. There are many specific references to actual scenes of the combat in the film, most specifically the very tall scaling ladder which is pushed back down by Bart as it carries several attackers. (edit)
Zorro
Homer's disguise as Esteban de la Sexface uses the hat, cloak and mustache from the Zorro series of films. The name is taken from Don Diego de la Vega, later Alejandro De la Vega. (edit)
