1. The simpsons have had there run? | 04/18/2008 11:51pm

im beggining to think that the simpsons are done for, they have had there fair share and have released ALOT of seasons.... if the simpsons is going to continue they need to make some new episodes, not constant replays, it gets boring there-for they looses ratings... there episodes arnt as addicting as they used to be and there quotes arnt as catchy... also since friends has taken over (atleast in Australia) its no longer the talk of the century... if you know what i mean, like 5 odd yrs ago it used to be the biggest latest thing now its not something you have to see everynight... which is disapointing since it takes frigin 12 shots of a camera equivilent to 1 sec of an animation show. The simpsons also made you feel apart of the show, like yearly it would be on a roll and u would feel like you were moving with it, catchier phrases, addicting eppies, and then the tree house of horror, possible one of the best season\eppies in the simpsons.... and then the massive simpsons quote books and gallery, then the motion picture which struck the world with YOU GOTTA SEE THIS MOVIE and homer manipulative as usual smart a** comment at the start of the huge potion picture. thanks simpsons you've been fun..

I think it was Matt Groening who said in an interview last year, "There is no end in sight".

REPOST FROM A WHILE BACK:

:
Remember when the Simpsons use to be a satire on modern life? It felt like a real family that has all the problems people face everyday. It used that and found humor in it. Sadly, this is no longer the case. They must be out of ideas, I'm sure, it's been going on for seventeen years now, (what ever happened to ending gracefully?). I think it might have something to do with Family Guy actually. The zany and random humor found in that show has caught on quite well. I think the writers of the Simpsons are trying to use that same style now. It just doesn't seem to be working. We need to bring back the clever satire that made this show a comedy everyone could relate to. Don't you miss how Homer use to have a temper? Like a real life father, he'd get frustrated with his hell raiser son, which was much funnier than how he just sputters out a whiney one-liner every time. And also Bart is very lame and tame these days. Since it's almost the holiday season, I decided to watch the original Simpsons' Christmas Special episode. It trully is a classic, and I made some mental comparisons with the episodes they have today. The show seems almost void of everyday life now. In the Christmas episode, Bart and Milhouse are at the mall watching the phony Santa Clause, which is really Homer. Barts dares Milhouse to sit on Santa's lap and Milhouse replies with a dare to pull his beard off. I realized if such a scenario happened in the modern episodes, Milhouse probably would have said something stupid about wetting the bed, or still believing in Santa, which is not funny. I hate how every character has to give a one-liner at every possible moment. It's pathetic. What ever happened to the realism? It makes the pay off of satire much more enjoyable. The city also seems much smaller. There are no random residents of Springfield anymore. Have you noticed this? Anyone walking down the street will either be the sea captain, or Bumble-Bee Man, or Comic Book Guy, etc. In the christmas episode, Homer and Marge are late for the school play and are pushing their way through to get to their seats. Along the way, Homer greets other parents, "hey Norman, how's it going? so you got dragged down here too, huh?" "How ya doing Fred?" There should be no Lenny, because Lenny does not have kids, and any other characters the new writers like to use all the time. Makes the city seem way to small and unbelievable. It wouldn't even be so bad if not for everytime we see one of the regulars they have to say yet another lame one-liner. The kids are another great annoyance these days. They are just crammed full of media inofrmation. They seem to know everything about every celebrity, movie, and historical figures. Lisa is suppose to be smart. As in wise and clever. Not full of pop-culture useless information. I'll give you an example from the Christmas episode of how Lisa use to be smart funny. Patti: "Oh nothing dear, I'm just trashing your father." Lisa: "Well, I wish you wouldn't, because aside from the fact that he has the same frailties as all human beings, he is the only father I have. Therefore, he is my model of manhood, and my estimation of him will govern my prospects of adult relationships. So bear in my, that any knock on him, is a knock on me. And I'm far too young to defend myself against such onslaughts." Patti: (Pauses) "Mmm-hmm, go watch your cartoon show dear." Now, I realize that the first two seasons weren't that much for humor, but it had it's good moments. The show peaked around the fourth to sixth seasons in my opinion. I was merely using the first Christmas episode as a comparison as I watched it recently. Gone are the classic satiral clever jokes and now we're left with bland one-liners and inconsistant personalities in far-fetched situations. I watched the new episode last sunday night, the first time in years, since they let me down. It was terrible. And it's sad really. Why beat a dead horse I ask you? Does anyone find this new junk funny? Here, I can imitate a present day Simpsons write for ya: Marge: "Bart! Don't steal." Bart: (Shrugs) "It works for Tony Dansa, and Comic Book Guy." Comic Book Guy: "I may be fat, but I know what I like." (Snaps fingers) Very unfunny eh? Sad thing is, they actually use junk like that. Although it's only slightly more clever.

"No end in sight" is what he said. Whether you like it or not, the simpsons will be here for about two or three more seasons, even if you do think the show should end now. I think it's highly unlikely that the ratings will plumet so much that the show will come to a halt. Come to think of it, I haven't seen ONE simpsons episode that got less than 5 million views, which is kind of a lot compared to 2 million or 1 million. So someone tell me why on earth they would end now when they're getting these ratings and an increasing number of new fans? They aren't giving up just yet. So when the show eventually does stop, it won't be because of the ratings, it'll be because the writers decided to wrap it up. Right now, they think they have enough to keep the show going. I remember Groening himself saying in an article somewhere that "the series is going strong, stronger than it ever has, so there is no reason to quit".

Yeah, and so is the "Scary Movie" franchise. It keeps gaining fans as the sequels progress, and I'd hardly call the follow-ups "good." BTW, part 5 is already in the works.

I disagree with you. I personally think this season has had episodes much much better than the ones theyve been airing for the past, say, 3-4 seasons. I really would be happy to see it go on for a few more seasons, as long as they keep getting better as they have been.

Sorry, I wasn't being clear. I didn't mean this season, I meant the previous seasons. Of course season 19 is great!

Season 19 is great i agree! But this show will at least go to Season 23-25, before cancellation begins to be talked about, well by the people who actually have the power to cancel the show.

Simpsons probably would befit from a) A huge cut down in re-runs, and a reduction of series lenght - say 12 episodes instead of 24. SO they can focus on improving the quality.

Simpsons always entertains me but the last 8 series havent really produced much memorable material. As others have already said, Simpsons is now a complete money spinner and the idea is going to be sucked bone-dry.

I've got a better question, and I'm sure my 'fans' will scoff at me even asking it, but...

Do you give more leeway to the show because it's been around so long and you (most likely) grew up with it, or do you feel the show should be held in the same light as other TV shows, regardless of their ages?

IMO, the show has become, for better or for worse, an institution that some people feel that cannot and should not be talked about in any serious manner other than how great it is (and always has been). To these people, complaining about anything the show does is like complaining about Christmas. It's like to these people, the Simpsons is no longer a TV show, but it's become their electronic best friend where it's suddenly okay to make excuses for their "friends" screw ups.

Obviously that analogy is a bit harsh, and I'm sounding like an obnoxious jerk right about now, but c'mon...I know ,and pretty much everyone here knows that constructive critisism cannot exist in a forum where people see the Simpsons as more than a TV show created by a group of people.

I honestly think that they should cancel the show after the 20th season, cut their losses, and stop trampling on what was once a great show. Come on, we all know that it's been on borrowed time for the last 9 years. I say cut it now, and then, in 30 years time, someone with new ideas, a new vision, will pick up an old DVD of a dusty old show called the Simpsons, and recreate. A new genesis. The franchise will return, with new spark and vigour. I could return to the glory days. But not now. The show is stale bread, and the only way to get rid of stale bread is to chuck it away and get a new loaf. Rats can feast on this one.

I beg to differ, I can talk about both the masterpiece it was for the first 10 seasons and the abysmal fest it was often for the past few years, and careful how u classify us.

perhaps its true we fans wll take into account the long run and the older better eps in our coment on newer ones... but i can still see them thirdparty style if i wish to... its not so much the show i view with a bias towards it but the characters and springfield and the universe itself... the show is just a representation of the universe... adverts don't happen in springfield... credit sequences arent 'real' there... so i guess i would be biased against criticis of the world and of the characters 'the simpsons' whereas i would third party observe and critic the show 'the simpsons'... however the long run isnt iportant in my thoughts on the current eps... altho i will stick up for the simpsons characters when ppl watching new eps coplain of their tiredness... i wll blame the episode akers and not the characters themselves...

When it does eventually end, I will cry, seriously.

It'll feel like a part of me died. I know that sounds too serious, but The Simpsons were born the same year I was born (The same MONTH in fact!), so i've literally grown up with them. It'll be a sad sad day in TV history when they go away.
