The Top Ten Most Annoying Characters On TV

by TV.com Staff TV.com Staff Writer 12/08/09 01:53 PM

We love TV. We love TV shows. We love TV characters. Well, for the most part. Unfortunately there are some characters on TV—on shows we like, on shows we hate—that are just so freaking annoying. Characters who make us groan every time they show up, who make us throw things (soft things) at the television set, who make us, however briefly, consider not watching the show at all. Because it's the holidays and our cold, Grinch-like hearts are extra black this time of year, and because everyone's doing top 10 lists right now, we decided to make a list of the top 10 most annoying characters on television. Agree with us? Vociferously disagree? Let us know in the comments!

The Top Ten Most Annoying Characters On TV

10) Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly, The Office

They didn't use to be annoying. Oh how we loved them once. We awwwed at their doe-eyed budding romance, guffawed at their cutely sarcastic asides, even swooned at their regular-folks good looks. But now? The two characters have just gotten so smug, haven't they? Jim's little eye rolls to the cameras and Pam's bordering-on-cruel humoring of Michael's crazy ideas—it all just seems so mean-spirited now. We get it, Jim and Pam. You're cute and young and have found love, while everyone else in the office is old and weird and alone. But you know what? We like those weirdos a lot more than you two these days. Heck, we even like Ryan more than you two. And we really don't enjoy Ryan. The writers need to write more scenes, or whole episodes even, where Jim and Pam prove to be just as silly and clueless as the other characters, or we may never like them again.

9) Vanessa Abrams, Gossip Girl

Why, exactly, is Vanessa even on this show? The character in the books was interesting—a shaved-headed, sexually curious artiste. But because The CW seems mostly unwilling to have any truly off-beat characters, they've served us this wan, lukewarm, centrist version of Vanessa. For the first two seasons her presence was only occasional, which we could tolerate. But now she's on every darn episode, stinking up the joint with her dumb video projects and wicked habit of dating really annoying boys (Dan's half-brother, anyone?) Vanessa doesn't really serve any grand purpose as a character on the show, she's only tied to Dan after all, and Jessica Szohr isn't exactly Kitty Hepburn in the acting department, so we're really not sure why she's not only still on the show, but been given a far bigger role this year. We suspect it has something to do with the fact that she's the only person of color in the otherwise lily-white cast.

The Top Ten Most Annoying Characters On TV

8) Barney Stinson, How I Met Your Mother

Legen... wait for it... darily annoying. What began five seasons ago as a fun little joke—look it's little Doogie Howser, an out gay person, as a total lady-hound!—has devolved into a lazy and uninteresting and overacted nightmare. Around the time the whole Bro Bible or Bro Code book came out, the dude-bro Barney jokes started to become increasingly stale and painfully forced. While the writers stirred up some interesting new notes last season by having Barney fall genuinely in love with Robin, that relationship is done now and he's back to his old, tiresome phrase-coining tricks. On a sitcom where most of the other characters are admirably fleshed-out as real people, Barney remains the sole caricature, a series of jokes your college buddies came up with that you laugh at less and less as the years go by.

The Top Ten Most Annoying Characters On TV

7) Rita Bennett, Dexter

While we mostly love the beatific Julie Benz, her complaining wifey character has been reduced to little more than whimpering and murmuring about Dexter's commitment to the family. We thought the character might go a little dark by stepping out on Dexter with the hunky next door neighbor, but all we got was a little kiss, Rita apologizing, and then feeling bad that Dexter didn't feel bad. Why the Dexter writers, who have shown that they can craft interesting well-rounded women characters in Deb and LaGuerta, tromp so heavily into nagging wife cliches with Rita is a more baffling mystery than some of Miami Metro's murder cases. Might Rita die next week? For the first time since the series began, we really feel like we wouldn't miss her.

The Top Ten Most Annoying Characters On TV

6) Mark Benford, FlashForward

Mark Benford is an alcoholic. And that's the best thing about him. A poor man's Jack from Lost that talks like Christian Bale's Batman and Steven Seagal, Benford is so one-dimensional that he disappears when he turns sideways. And he's supposed to be our hero? Never before in the history of television have we had to rely on such an incompetent FBI agent. Not only do we not trust him to figure out what happened in the event of a worldwide blackout, we wouldn't even trust him to find out what happened in the event of a freshman coed's blackout at a frat party. And for God's sake, unfurrow your brow.

The Top Ten Most Annoying Characters On TV

5) Brandon, V

The heavyset sidekick is a staple of entertainment, and almost impossible to screw up. But along comes V with the most annoying fat friend ever. Brandon, Tyler's portly wingman, is just around to say things like, "Dude! Awesome! That chick is hot!" The guy is so annoying he makes Tyler look tolerable by comparison. Our theory? The writers needed an alien to befriend Tyler before the invasion and came up with Brandon, a lizard in disguise (it's so obvious). Only they forgot to give him a human side, too.

The Top Ten Most Annoying Characters On TV

4) Elliot Stabler, Law & Order: SVU

While we still love this show's silly/grim melodrama, our beloved Det. Stabler is wearing on our nerves a bit. Seriously, just how many cases can you get Too Close To? How many times can you let your bellicose Catholicism and old-guard Marines-iness affect how you handle a case before you have to turn in your gun and badge, permanently? SVU has always been the most interesting iteration of Dick Wolf's theater-industry-saving (so many actors employed...) juggernaut franchise, but not only because it deals with wicked and prurient things like sex crimes. We also enjoy that you do get to know the characters a little bit, that there's some genuine psychology at work in the heroes beyond the original series' weary seen-it-all-ism. But it has gotten to be a bit much. Olivia's problems are at least a bit more nuanced, whereas every other week the show seems to simply be the Christopher Meloni Acts Intense Hour. For example, did you see that ludicrous solitary-confinement episode? We half expected "White Rabbit" to start playing while Elliot went slowly mad in his cell. Talk about melodrama.

The Top Ten Most Annoying Characters On TV

3) Bill Compton, True Blood

The worst thing that can happen to a TV show is for its romantic lead to make his big entrance and then sorta... whiff it. While we love love love True Blood, we're just not down with the fangs that Sookie Stackhouse is banging. Because he's short and whiny and prudish and a too-awkward mixture of gruff and tender. There's nothing dangerous about him, and isn't the implicit danger sort of the whole point of a vampire/human love story? A nation of TB fans seem to agree with us, judging by the collective sighs of relief (and moans of... well, relief) that went up when the far more intriguing Eric strode onto the screen. We get that Bill is central to the whole saga and mythos of the story, but does he have to be such a weenie all the time, especially when standing next to the (way taller) Eric?

The Top Ten Most Annoying Characters On TV

2) Abby Sciuto, NCIS

There is a lot of annoyingness on NCIS, a big, clunkily-written, flag-waving rock 'em sock 'em. That British guy with the bowtie? Why is he there? The other dude, the supposed-to-be-hot one? Feh. But worst of all is Abby Sciuto, the alterna techie who exists solely to give the show a little quirk or "edge." Only NCIS isn't that kind of show, it's not plugged-in enough to give us smart jokes about trendy things. Abby is the rah-rah Conservative's idea of what a snarky Liberal should sound like, and it just doesn't work. Plus, it cuts into all the gunplay! We want more shooting, less creaky jokes about goths and other "Look at that crazy broad" stuff.

The Top Ten Most Annoying Characters On TV

1) Eric Murphy & Johnny Chase, Entourage

Much like Barney, Johnny Drama was a funny, likable mook that has of late become a broadly-drawn bore. His character has gone from being a subtle and sympathetic joke about loser celebrity siblings to just plain pathetic, as dumb and sloppily-rendered a depiction of male idiocy as latter-years Homer Simpson. And Homer is, you know, a cartoon. And Eric... Well, Eric's been annoying from the get-go. This little pissy fast-talker who has no right to be pissy or fast-talking. The joke in the early seasons was that he was a Sbarro manager turned inept Hollywood player. But now that the show has settled into an irksome rhythm of sweet cars, hot chicks, and good times, Eric is nothing more than a Napleonic boy's fantasy, a character who's suddenly "cool" because it's easier to have him be cool. And while we're at it, you know who else is annoying on Entourage? Everyone. Especially The Women. You know, all those lanky model types who are always so down with "Vince" and "E" and "Drama", who play to the sexy whims of the boys' club. If Sex and the City was the ultimate female fantasia about a city full of interesting, impossibly-dashing men, then Entourage is a crude, and depressingly popular, male dreamscape about a city full of dimensionless women who just want to spend their languid afternoons getting stoned and putting out. And we've really grown tired of it.

  • I find Jim and Pam the most annoying. partly because they used to be so sweet and ground-to-earth. But their characters are pretty much destroyed now. "SMUGNESS IS A VERY BAD QUALITY."

  • I like SVU and I don't think it would work without Stabler. I love the original cast.... all of them. Benson, Stabler, Munch, Fin, Huang, Warner, and even Cragen all need to stay.

  • I posted this on the other "Annoying Characters" list, too. I LOVE Tony. His character acts like a jerk, but that's not the entire depth of the character. And I didn't like Abby at first either. But her character is caring and kind and I have grown to love her. If either of them were killed off, I would be saddened. However, I have never really cared for McGee.

  • Abby and Ncis are one the best things on tv.. maybe whoever did these reviews should watch the show instead of asking some random hobos what they think of it.

  • just found this article via facebook, it says it's written by tv.com staff? I do hope that's still not the case and the writer is now back at the supermarket tabloid they came from. It's gossip mag stuff aimed at the audience for celebrity gossip without the celebrity. Try a bit of integrity to get interaction rather than blatently desparate, inaccurate, unresearched and deliberately inflamatory drivel

  • Seriously? Abby? Get a bloody clue.

  • what loonatics made this Abby Sciuto is sooooooo not annoying she is AMAZING! How dare they make her number 2 :(

  • Abby Sciuto... really? If your going to rate a show, try watching more than 1 episode. The fact that you don’t know what "ducky" (British guy with the bowtie) does shows how ignorant you are. If writing these articles is your day job, you need a new line of work. To the person who hired you, fire this idiot and find someone with talent.

  • I loved Rita on Dexter, and I will definitely miss her. Her new role on Desperate Housewives is a joke. I agree with the choice of Mark on Flash Forward; although I like the actor, in this show he's one-dimensional and annoying. I disagree with the choice of Stabler from SVU; he's one of my favourites. I love his intensity. I don't watch the other shows.

  • Abby is awesome and I love her! She fits into the show fantastically. She's the family who's always caring about everybody and always there to give a hug to those in need. She's happy and loving and a great person.

  • Okay, I agree with everyone of these EXCEPT Abby. She's the most awesome one on NCIS! She makes the show awesome!

  • Seriously? Abby? No way!

  • Abby Makes the Show Great and breaks all the shooting and death.. its brings some of the comedy in there if they lost Abby and Gibbs I don't think I would watch anymore.. Almost Stopped when I watched a few seasons ago and Saw gibbs leave thought that was gonna be the last season I was gonna watch.

  • Where is Gilly, Trina, Shawna, Judy Grimes, Jean K. Jean, Aunt Linda, Nicholas Fehn, Riley from Saturday Night Live?!!!???? Hey, Barney is Cool. He's No More Annoying than Charlie Sheen on 2.5 Men.

  • NCIS is an awsome show. The charature abby is one of the reasons I watch. Period.

  • WHAT THE HELL....Barney sooo doesnt belong here....he rocks...i mean he keeps the show going... + another ultra annoying character would be Janice (Chandlers Ex) from FRIENDS

  • I can't believe you slammed Abby on NCIS. You missed number one annoying person I can think of. When they brought her back, I quit watching the show. Don't know if she is still on or not and don't care. I won't watch it. CSI Sarah Sidle (Jorja Fox)

  • I Love Abby, she is one of my favorite cast members on the show.

  • add a comment You list the 10 most annoying characters currently on TV, and The Office makes the list, but instead of Michael Scott, you list Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly??!!! All I can think of in your defense is that the Michael character is way beyond annoying. i can't watch the show becaue theat character is so off puting amd so central. Easily the most obnoxious character I've ever seen in 55 years of viewing.

  • I agree with the person below me.

  • Good God whoever wrote this has no personality. The annoying characters are obviously doing their job. They got your attention and you watched them.

  • Thiswriter and probably the editor is a freaking idiot. TV's #! Drama gets slammed by you? NCIS, as JAG before that, is a very well written show. Abby's character brings a comedic poise that other shows do not have, and shows that someone a little crazy and edgy can also be highly intelligent. Fvck you guys.

  • Who ever wrote this crap should better post it on their pathetic blog instead of offending all the fans..

  • Neil Patrick Harris wasn't even 'out' when the show started. So it wasn't just "a fun little joke". He came out part way through the second season, I believe.

  • right where would these shows be without these characters. Go back to school critics and learn about script writing

  • My guess is that the people who wrote this list are gothic liberals who are offended that everyone likes Abby, and not them. Abby isn't a conservative's view of a liberal, she is a sweet girl that likes black. Ducky is the only person that Gibbs can open up to, THAT'S WHY HE IS ON THE SHOW. Who said Tony was supposed to be hot? He's the comedy on that show.

  • Who ever wrote this trash had to be smoking the good stuff.

  • Who writes this stuff? Obviously no one who watches NCIS. True if it were CSI or Law and Order, then Abby, Ducky, Tony, and the rest might seem out of place, but the difference is that NCIS is not a crime show that happens to have characters, it is a character show that happens to have crime. Everywhere I look I see that NCIS is the #1 show on television...true or not, it is definitely up there. Obviously they are doing something right and since the "annoying" characters are so prominent in the show, maybe they aren't so annoying after all.

  • Abby? Abby sucks? OMG no way! Lately, I feel her part has been reduced and I find the show somehow boring! Remember when she turned her lab into a crime scene because her cupcake was stolen and when she barricaded herself with the German sheppard in order to save him? She should be given a greater part with Duckie where she will do more researches like at the beginning of the show. Anyway, my opinion but I fully respect others' of course.

  • this list sucks........it would not be the same without barny (how i met your mother), and abby ..she is anything but not annoying....

  • What a load of garbage! if you take more than half these characters out of their shows you you have a completely different (and boring) show. Barney? Are you crazy? HIMYM IS Barney Stinson!! The writer could have mentioned half a dozen characters in heroes (Claire Bennet, Tracy Strauss, etc) along with the full cast of Secret life of an American Teenager. What next writer? Gonna say there's no need for half the characters in Lost? Moron.

  • WRONG! Abby and NCIS are the greatest. It is no fluke that NCIS has been on the air for seven seasons. People love it! It is witty and intelligent and just plain fun! Sorry if it isn't your brand of T.V. but for millions of us out here and across the world it is what we love. Whoever compliled this list needs to get over him/her self.

  • I thank you wholeheartedly for finally speaking out on the idiocy that is Entourage, and particularly Johnny Drama.

  • I think Caroline from The Vampire Diaries belongs on this list....

  • Finally someone said it, Bill from True Blood has gotten so whimpy and boring.

  • I'm really glad that I'm not the only one that really hates Jim and Pam now. Well, more so Pam than Jim, but Jim is definitely getting there. How you can take two lovable and awesome characters and screw them up so badly is beyond me. But apparently it can be done and The Office writers should be punched in the face for doing it. Pam is a witch. All she does is bellyache at Michael. Jim became incompetent, which the last time I checked Jim was a smart, sharp, and strong character, just really lazy. I really don't care about them anymore. I watch the show for Michael, Andy, and Dwight. The other characters I could careless about. They have always been a means to an end. FlashForward is all around abysmal. The writing is just BAD. BAD. BAD. I think the main character being so bad could large in part be due to the writing.

  • OMG thank you!! while i lovelovelove abby and all of ncis, what you said about vanessa is absolutely perfect! i only wish the producers and everything of gossip girl saw it that way. she is such a wet noodle. and i thought i was the only one getting tired of jim and pam. something seriously needs to change when the most normal and lovable characters becomes tiresome. although stephen moyer is so charming, bill compton is just bland, especially by comparison to the nordic god that is eric. again, i think abby is perfect but thank you for the rest of your spot on criticisms.

  • Abby's great, try Tony Dinozo, enough with that joking around all the time, how unreal is that.

  • Your crazy. I love Abby on NCIS. I love the show and wouldn't miss it! Abby is great. I love the relationships she has with everyone else especially her boss. There is nothing annoying about her or any of the other cast on that show.

  • I haven't watched much new TV the last few years. To be honest, I have not seen many of the shows in this list. In 2009 I got put off watching SVU when it was screened here in Australia because of the bad promotion it got: The promo for every episode made it sounds like one of them might die, followed by the line "You won't guess/believe what happens next". Sounds like I haven't missed much. And I like SVU. I don't like "Entourage" (or "Sex And The City" for that matter) so feel free to bag it out. As for Abby in NCIS, she is my favorite character from a show that I don't watch much but every time I do, I love it. Why don't I watch it more? Because I've spent too long watching the so-called "edgy" shows on Australian subscription television. I'm getting it disconnected next week and buying more DVD's with the money I save. Quite frankly it'll be refreshing to get back to network television for a while. Who knows? This year I might even watch "House" as it goes to air again as opposed to waiting for the DVD's!

  • O don't let me forget Abby is the bestest!

  • Are you people CRAZY! NCIS rocks! Abby is great! You people need to come back from the stereo typical world you live in. Think back to when you was in school. All these characters come from real people. Ducky- the over educated know it all, Gibbs- show no love, always serious, most caring person in the world, AND Tony- come on we all know the ones stuck on themselves think that they all that, corny but cute!

  • I found the comments about Abby to be both naive and laughable. She presents the "Goth" look at times, and even toys with various verboten topics, she actually very conservative on some themes and has more in common with many of the viewers you say the show is trying to reachThe thing is that her character keeps you guessing about what's next, kinda like real people. Hmmm...depth and personality. Good qualities when designing a character. Of course, maybe I get it because it grew up in New Orleans and learned to appreciate people beyond the masks.

  • The most annoying character on TV is Tony DiNozo on NCIS. He is conceited, he talks down to everyone else on the show, acts as if he is God's gift to women, spends every episode spouting stupid movie trivia, and in general he is an idiot. He is the reason I stopped watching NCIS.

  • An observation: most of the people who are crazy opposed to this list seem to be offended mostly because of the inclusion of any NCIS character--and Abby, in particular. Seems as though these commenters think the whole list must be crap because of Abby's inclusion on it. Perhaps try considering the reasons rather than reacting personally. While I'm not annoyed by all 10 on this list (or all of the ones on List #2 either), I can see the writer's case for even those characters I enjoy. For instance, I really like How I Met Your Mother, including Ted and Barney, but I do see the list author's point--Barney's predictable, Ted can be smug. And I still love The Office's Jim and Pam, but the author's point that they have become a little too "doe-eyed" is true. This doesn't mean I'll stop watching these shosw or liking these characters, just that I can see how they may resonate differently with other people.

  • Really? NCIS is full of annoying characters? Huh, that's funny... I thought it was one of the highest rated dramas on TV at the moment. But my bad, because if it was full or annoying characters, then why would anyone want to watch it?

  • I have 2 things to say to the person who made this list: 1. you have clearly no sence of humor 2. Your an idiot!!!

  • I don't know if these are the most annoying characters on tv or not, but I can get on board with all of these except for Abby. She's the best character on the show. It's interesting that the first additional character you mentioned was Ducky, because he's also a great character. Now, all of the other characters on that show may get on my nerves. . . but not those two. She sleeps in a coffin. It's freaking awesome. None of the others are believable as bad-asses, but Abby and Ducky never claim to be, so we never have to try to believe it.

  • I agree about Abby, but frankly shes the one I hate the least out of everyone on NCIS. Gibbs comes in at number one for me.

  • I completely agree with Jim and Pam, Rita, and Mark.
