A couple, Chris and Ruth Miller, are sleeping in their suburban home when they hear their daughter Tina crying. Chris tiredly gets up and goes to see what the matter is, telling their dog Mack outside to be quiet. He gets to Tina room and finds that she's not in bed. He can still hear her crying and assumes she's under the bed. However, he looks there and sees nothing. He calls for Ruth, who comes in together they search for their daughter. They can still hear Tina crying but she's nowhere to be found. A desperate Chris calls Bill, a neighbor who works as a physicist, and convinces him to come over. As Mack continues barking, Chris lets him in and the dog runs past Ruth and under the bed... where he disappears.

Bill comes over and marks the bed leg positiions with books and then he and Chris move it ouit of the way. Bill goes over the floor, carefully feeling, and then gets to the wall. He reaches one spot and his hand vanishes into the wall. Bill concludes that the wall marks the place where this dimension and some other fourth dimension have come into parallel with each other. Bill feels around and uses a piece of chalk to mark the corners of the "juncture" and then connect them together so they can determine the exact dimensions of the portal. Bill warns that the juncture is a temporary one, and then Tina's voice fades away. Bill has them make noise to attract Tina's attention and then search the house. They finally locate her voice in the living room, as even minor movements she makes in the fourth dimension place her differently in the third. They realize that Mack has found Tina and Bill has Chris call to the dog to lead Tina back. They go back to the bedroom and try to get Mack to bring Tina home, but her voice starts to fade again. Chris reaches into the juncture to try and grab her... and finds himself in the fourth dimension, an impossible landscape of distortion, light, and mist. He calls to Mack and the dog pulls at Tina's nightgown and guides her toward her father. Bill tells Chris to find Tina quickly but warns him not to move. Chris manages to grab Tina, and once Bill confirms he is holding his daughter tightly, pulls them all back into the real world.

As Ruth takes her daughter out of the room, Bill explains that Chris had only gone halfway through the portal, and Bill was holding onto him. He was telling Chris to hurry because the juncture was closing... and if Chris had been caught in-between when it sealed itself, there's no telling where he might have been.
