The Virginian, Trampas and Steve attend the pre-wedding celebration of a neighbour and good friend of Judge Garth's, middle-aged and wealthy Lars Holstrum (Peter Whitney), who is about to marry a 20 year old girl. When he is kidded about marrying so young a girl, to show off his virility and strength Lars lifts a large anvil, injures his back, and is confined to bed. This creates a problem as he is supposed to travel to Laramie to meet his bride to be, Katia Swenson, and her family who are passing by on a wagon train. He reveals he has to also deliver a $1000 loan to her father Gosta Swenson and not trusting his own men, he tries to get one of the Shiloh cowboys to undertake the task of travelling to Laramie and back for him. When he reveals he is also willing to give $100 to whoever does it all are interested but since The Virginian must run Shiloh he is ruled out. Steve and Trampas cut cards for the privilege and the latter is the winner.
Trampas goes to Laramie and finds the wagon train just outside of town and he finds Gosta has four beautiful daughters. Gosta is reluctant to let his daughter go with a complete stranger he knows nothing about and tells Trampas his family will have to talk about it and decide in the morning. Trampas beds down for the night but is awakened by whom he assumes is Katia Swenson (Katherine Crawford) who says she has decided to go to Lars herself so they pack up and the ride off in a wagon towing Trampas' horse. Unbeknownst to him, they are being followed by a man from the wagon train who had had an argument with Katia before they left.
On the way they find evidence of an Indian campsite and Trampas fears it may be some renegade Arapaho Indians who left the reservation and are raiding farmhouses and ranches in the area. They set up camp for the night and hear evidence of Indians in the area. The next morning Katia finds a cow which she milks which bears a brand leading Trampas to believe it is a stolen cow from a ranch raided by the renegades. He rides off to a nearby Trapper's cabin he knows to see if they can help and finds the cabin burned to the ground. Returning he finds Katia missing and trails her to a nearby Indian camp where he finds only women present whom Katia is showing how to make buttermilk! He retrieves her telling the women Katia is his woman and they head out but he learns she told the Indian women where they were going, including the reason for going to see wealthy Lars Holstrum, and he fears the Indians may try and kidnap her for ransom.
Reaching a point about two hours from Holstrum's ranch, Katia insists on stopping to take a bath in the creek to make herself presentable to Lars while Trampas waits nearby. A bunch of cowpokes driving horses come by led by Harkness (Stewart Bradley). Katia appears buys a horse from Harkness and reveals in the process she has the $1000 in her bag which Trampas tries to hide fearing the cowboys will attempt to steal it. They ride off towards Holstrum's and Trampas sees they are being pursued both by a group of Indians and by a group of the cowboys. He leaves Katia in what he thinks is a safe place and rides off to get help at Holstrum's ranch. However, Katia is found by the Indians and Trampas is intercepted by Harkness and his men.
To Trampas' surprise Harkness takes him to Holstrum as they think he has kidnapped Lars' woman for the ransom money they saw in the bag. Then the Indians arrive with Katia – they are not the renegades but friends of Lars who think that Trampas stole her as she told their wives she was going to Lars but Trampas said she was his woman. Lars is also confused as the woman they have brought is not Katia but actually her sister, Anna Swenson. Anna reveals that Katia has fallen for someone else and that she came to return Lars $1000 and explain what has happened. Then the man from the wagon train who has been trailing them arrives and turns out to be Anna's boyfriend, Sven Norbeck (Ricks Falk), who asks her to marry him. A wedding occurs at Holstrum's ranch but it is Anna and Sven, not Lars and Katia, with Trampas serving as best man.
