Emmet Ryker leads a group of men to Dancer's Pass where they attempt to take down a fence but are stopped by a warning shot from widower Sam Horn (John Lupton). The property of Sam and his neighbours has been expropriated for the Denver and Great Western Railway and they are not happy. One of the men, Scott Briscoe (Buck Taylor) is the son of the railway's president, Colonel John Briscoe (Edward Binns) and he has harsh words with Sam and eventually strikes Sam with a pair of wire cutters. Judge Garth arrives with a writ postponing the railway from building through the pass. In a private railway car at Medicine Bow, John Briscoe has harsh words with his son while his wife Judith (Virginia Christine) looks on. Judge Garth arrives and it turns out he knew Mrs. Briscoe in Denver, many years before. The Colonel explains that he needs to build through the pass to access the copper mines but the Judge complains that the territorial government has authorized payment based on land values in a ten year old assessment and that the properties are now worth ten times that much – but Briscoe refuses to pay more.
Jack Marshman (George Kennedy), head of security for the railway, informs John Briscoe that an old problem, young Peg Dineen (Laurel Goodwin), is in Medicine Bow. At the hotel, Sam Horn meets Peg in the hotel restaurant where she works and it is clear they are friends. Scott Briscoe comes to the restaurant and recognizes Peg and one suspects they were involved at one time. He will not leave Peg alone until Sam steps in but later, watched by Marshman, Scott visits Peg at Mrs. Crandall's boarding house. It is revealed Scott had asked Peg to marry him but when he had gone to his father he had been sent off to Europe, abandoning Peg. Peg reveals she no longer loves Scott and that she has an infant son. She has told everyone she is a widow but Scott learns that the boy is really his son and he swears to make up for the past problems. Later Scott reveals to his mother that he was in love with a woman and that he had been forced to go to Europe by the Colonel.
At Shiloh, Sam Horn discusses with Judge Garth and the Virginian the fact the Dancer's Pass owners have agreed to pay for another land appraisal and Sam agrees to take the money to the appraisers in Laramie. Scott Briscoe visits his father but the Colonel refuses to give money for the baby, saying the knowledge would upset his wife, and also says he will handle Peg. Scott tells Peg she should leave, fearing for her safety but she refuses. Marshman reveals to Scott that Sam Horn is taking the money to Laramie. Sam talks to Peg. We learn he had asked her to marry him but she had told him she could not marry anyone, perhaps worrying Sam would lose respect for her if he learned she had had her baby out of wedlock. Sam is followed by Scott who knocks Sam out to steal the appraisal money for Peg and her baby. However, as he runs away Sam recovers and after warning him shoots and kills Scott.
At the jail, Colonel Briscoe says he does not believe Sam's robbery story, that there was no reason his son would need money, and that he wants Sam hanged. The Colonel tells Marshman to get Peg out of town so no one will learn Scott wanted the money for her. Judge Garth and Emmett learn from Mrs. Crandall (Elizabeth Harrower) that Marshman took Peg out of town and reason there must be something behind it. The Judge tries unsuccessfully to find out from Mrs. Briscoe why Scott was upset while Emmett searches for Peg. The trial is going badly but Emmett manages to find Peg and get her out of Marshman's hands. The Judge confronts the Briscoes with Peg who reveals, and Mrs. Briscoe believes her, that she and Scott once loved one another. However the Colonel refuses to acknowledge his grandchild and he and his wife afterwards have harsh words.
In court Peg testifies that Scott was the father of her child and that he was trying to get money for her. However, the prosecutor (Paul Comi) claims she is in love with Sam Horn and is lying to protect him. Judge Garth in a grandstand play takes Peg's baby to Mrs. Briscoe in the courtroom and asks her if this is her grandchild. She does not answer but tenderly takes the baby in her arms. The jury finds Sam innocent and he rushes from the court room after Peg. Meanwhile, Mrs. Briscoe tell the Colonel they will help Peg and her baby and also forces him to pay the landowners what their expropriated property is worth. Outside the court all observe Sam walking with Peg and taking her baby in his arms.
