Trampas and Steve Hill, in town to collect supplies, observe a large crowd at the railway station and upon inquiry learn they are awaiting the arrival of opera singer Elena. Elena (Yvonne DeCarlo) arrives with her secretary, Karen Osterling (Melinda Plowman), and a pile of luggage and her beauty inspires even Steve and Trampas to attend a performance with Judge Garth and Betsy. After the concert, Elena receives a telegram from a "Carl" indicating he will be arriving soon, and Judge Garth goes backstage to visit Elena, whom he recognizes as a Helen Haldeman he knew well when a young, beginning lawyer. He invites her to visit Shiloh Ranch. After Judge Garth leaves, her secretary expresses disapproval and hints Elena has made a career of romancing a series of men in every town she visits. The Judge and Elena see a lot of each other and it is clear a romance is brewing.

Carl Elston arrives at the hotel and it is evident Elena's secretary is attracted to him. The Judge drops off Elena at the hotel and as he is leaving a shot rings out. Sheriff Mark Abbott and Judge Garth arrive on the scene and find Elena bruised and disheveled, a gun in her hand, and Carl dead. She claims she does not know the man and that he broke into her room and forced her attentions upon her so she was forced to shoot him – a claim backed up by her secretary. The Sheriff discovers, however, that she had received the telegram from Carl and he and the Judge begin to doubt the veracity of Elena's story. Also, on searching Carl's luggage Sheriff Abbott discovers a contract indicating he was Elena's theatrical manager and another undisclosed document. Therefore, the county prosecutor, Elliot Powers (Paul Comi), charges Elena with first degree murder and Judge Garth is forced to defend her.

In court, Powers elicits testimony that reveals that Elena is not the famous singer she purports to be as her resume is a fraud, and the local doctor testifies her bruises could have been self-inflicted. Powers also produces a marriage license for Elena and Carl and argues that she killed him so she would be free to marry the Judge. The Judge wants to know why Elena has made a fool of him and believe her secretary, whom he observes leaving flowers on Carl Powers grave, knows the truth. He calls her as a witness and it is revealed Elena is her mother and that she was attracted to Carl. He argues the daughter killed Carl because she discovered her mother was married to him. Elena denies this and agrees to testify. She states the marriage license is a forgery and that she was not a success as a singer so Carl used to set her up with wealthy men whom would be invited to her room and then Carl would break in and blackmail them. She saw her daughter, who had only been with her for three months, was in love with Carl, so knowing the kind of man he was, she had fired him as her manager. However, when he showed up not intending to leaver her daughter alone, she got in an argument and struggle with him and was forced to shoot him to protect Karen. The episode ends with the Judge seeing Elena and her daughter off on the train out of Medicine Bow, Elena declaring that it was too late to rediscover their old love.
