Trampas and Randy notice that someone has bought the old Kendall ranch. At the ranch, the new owner, Carl Henricks (Victor Jory) argues with his son, Arnie (Chris Robinson) who wants to spend more time in the saloon than getting the ranch in shape. In town, Arnie talks with saloon girl Joan (Joan O'Brien) with whom he is smitten. She does not take their relationship seriously, however, and implies that she would only marry a man with money. Arnie notices a whisky drummer (Louis Quinn) win $600.00 at poker and follows him outside where he sees him board the stage. Arnie heads off the stage and masked and covered with a poncho, robs it and wounds the man riding shotgun, in the process. He returns to his father's ranch and hides the money in a strongbox in the barn.
Carl and Chris Hendricks arrive at a Medicine Bow dance along with Carl's daughter, Jenny (Katharine Ross). Jenny is reluctant to go inside but her father says they have to meet their neighbours. Trampas has come to the dance with his shy friend, blacksmith Wally Koerner (Larry Pennell). He encourages Wally to ask Jenny to dance but she refuses. Trampas, to show him proper technique then tries his luck and she refuses him but he is persistent and when he tries to get her to stand up Pa Hendricks intervenes and strikes him. As the Hendricks leave it becomes obvious Jenny has a club foot. The next day Betsy visits Trampas who is feeling depressed because of his actions the night before. Betsy encourages him to visit the Hendricks to apologize and he only does so when she implies he would be a coward not to do so. Arnie tries to get Trampas to leave but his father lets Trampas meet Jenny. He apologizes and she accepts and he asks her to the local bazaar the next week.
Trampas take Jenny to the bazaar along with Wally and even gets Randy and Betsy to show up. They have a good time but it is implied Trampas is trying to set up Wally with Jenny and they seem to like each other. Meanwhile Arnie meets Joan at the saloon and implies he has $600.00. She realizes he has robbed the money from the stage and tells him she does not want anything to do with a man running from the law. Carl, being protective of his daughter, tries to encourage a match with Trampas who he tries to hire away from Judge Garth to be his top hand. Trampas is leary of such a prospect. In town waiting for Jenny, Emmett Ryker tells Trampas he has heard he is going to be the new top hand at the Hendricks place and Jenny overhears and realizes what is happening. Emmett also visits Arnie Hendricks as he suspects he might be the stage coach robber. However, Carl Hendricks covers for Arnie.
After Emmett leaves Carl, realizing his son's guilt, goes to the barn where he tries to open Arnie's strong box with a knife. Arnie intervenes and Carl accidentally falls on the knife and is killed. Trampas brings Jenny back and they talk in the summer house. They admit they are good friends but they are not interested in each other romantically. While they are talking Arnie stumbles to Trampas' buggy with the knife. When he hears Trampas returning he accidentally drops the knife in the buggy and hides. Jenny discovers the body and Emmett is called in. Emmett learns that Trampas was the only visitor but lacking a motive and not being stupid enough to leave the murder weapon lying around, he thinks Trampas innocent. Arnie suggests a drifter was hanging around a couple of days before and might be responsible. At the coroner's inquest Emmett, suspicious of Arnie's testimony and seeing him as the only credible suspect, manages to get Arnie to confess and reveal it was an accident. Jenny decides to move into Medicine Bow to live until things get settled and Wally helps her. It is clear romance is blossoming between the two, just as Trampas, who is seen smiling at the end, hoped.
