After release from prison having served a full five year sentence, Sam Harter (Bradford Dillman) arrives in Medicine Bow where he encounters Trampas, an old friend with whom he had worked as a ranch hand. In flashback it is revealed that Harter had plotted with Bleek (John Dehner) to rob $50,000 in gold bullion and had attempted to get Trampas to take part. Trampas would have no part of the deal and Bleek had wanted to kill Trampas but Harter had protected him and let him go.

After the robbery Bleek had escaped, his identity unknown to the authorities, and Harter had been captured but not before he had hidden the gold of which only he knew the whereabouts. He wanted to return the gold to the authorities and return to a wife in Texas but he knew Bleek would come looking for him to settle scores.

Harter gets a job at Shiloh Ranch through Trampas' auspices and the Virginian learns of his past through a government agent on the trail (Ed Asner). Bleek contacts Harter who agrees to take him to the gold but Bleek also gets his associates to kidnap and bring along Trampas as insurance and because Trampas knows Bleek's identity and of his involvement in the robbery. After arriving at the gold's location Harter kills Bleek in a gun fight and the authorities arrive led by the Virginian who had been following them in case assistance was needed.
