Judge Garth, Trampas and Steve travel a long distance by stage to Red Rock to visit a very old friend of the Judge, Wade Anders (Lloyd Nolan). Anders, who has two sons, is going to give the Judge some breeding stock for the new breed of chicken he has imported, the Rhode Island Red. No sooner do they reach town then Trampas has a run in with the eldest son, Hank (Chris Robinson) who is mistreating an Indian (Jack Bighead). At the Anders Ranch, they meet the younger son Ben (Ryan O'Neal) and Anders, who is crippled by arthritis, reveals to the Judge that he has not told his sons they had two different mothers. He also reveals that he has no hopes for his two sons taking over his ranch. He has more faith in Hank with whom he finds himself constantly at odds, and would like the Judge to take Hank to work as a hand at Shiloh to try and straighten him out. Over the objections of both the Judge and Hank, they do return to Shiloh. However, the Virginian goes to Denver leaving Trampas as head hand and he and Hank are constantly at odds. Hank is also smitten with Betsy but she is not sure about him and does not like it when Hank verbally abuses Little Fawn (Tina Menard), a Crow Indian who is helping her make soap.

Hank eventually tells the Judge he is leaving Shiloh and lets him know he is aware his mother was a Crow Indian – since his father has never told him this, he thinks his father is ashamed of him and hence his hatred for Indians. Hank goes to town to wait for the stage and at the bar meets Trampas with whom he has harsh words and threatens to have a gunfight. Trampas, unaware that Hank's mother was Crow, tells him it is the "firewater talking" and tries to back out of the fight but when Hank draws Trampas is forced to kill him.

Despite his health problems, Wade Anders rides all the way to Medicine Bow with his younger son Ben to find out how his son died. When he hears he was shot by Trampas, he encourages his son, who he always deprecated, to go gunning for Trampas. Ben is reluctant to do so but decides he would rather be dead than unimportant to his father so he rides to Shiloh and tells Trampas he will be waiting for him in town. The Judge rides to town to talk to Wade Anders and Steve tries to keep Trampas at the ranch but eventually Trampas gets away. The Judge confronts Anders and reveals that the reason his son Hank had a death wish was the fact he thought his father was ashamed of his Indian background – this was what killed him – and that he is simply encouraging his other son to die too. Recognizing his folly Anders goes into the street and stops his son from having the gunfight with Trampas.
