After several weeks Steve loses his pack horse and supplies to an attack of the cougar and comes to a homestead owned by Nancy Mayhew (Joyce Bulifant) and her husband Charles (Jack Klugman), who assist him. The Mayhew's relationship is strained and Steve learns that Charles son from his first marriage was killed by the same cougar and that Nancy blames this on Charles' cowardice. Nancy also indicates she is interested romantically in Steve but he resists her suggestions. Charles and Steve set a trap for the cougar with a calf as bait but Charles misses his chance to shoot the animal which instead mauls Steve's leg. Dr. Saddler (Blair Davies) manages to save the leg and advises Steve to leave, seeing Nancy's interest in him. However, when he is largely recovered from his wound he ends up falling for Nancy and Charles catches them in an embrace.

Charles goes alone after the cat alone as almost a death wish and Steve decides to leave and at Nancy's urging take her with him, abandoning his hunt for the cougar. The cougar attacks them at the house and Steve manages to drive it off armed only with an axe. This strengthens his resolve to continue the chase and he convinces Nancy to stay with her husband. Charles has discovered the lair of the cougar and when Steve comes to assist, Charles knocks him out and stakes him out as bait. The cougar attacks Charles instead and Steve manages to free himself and with only a stake as a weapon kills the cougar by forcing him into a pit of stakes and saves Charles life.
