A perceptive western fan, Regina Davis, has informed me that the basic plot of this episode seems to have been reworked and reused in the later "Alias Smith & Jones" western TV series, and specifically in a Season 1 episode entitled "The Girl in Box Car #3" that was first broadcast in February, 1971. That episode also had the same writer (Howard Browne) and story credit (Gene Roddenberry) as this Virginian episode. (edit)
Generally, the Virginian episodes that do not hold up well today are some of the more comedic ones which degenerate too much into farce. However, this episode is a bit better than most due to the perfomances of the leads and episode co-stars and the inclusion of some serious bits of business to offset the comedy and make the story more palatable. An example is a sequence in which the Virginian learns from a couple who had given him shelter of the death of their only child. (edit)
Neither Judge Garth or Trampas appear in this episode. (edit)
