Mike Tyrone (Ed Begley), his daughter Margaret (Beverly Owen), and his two sons, Kevin (Rees Vaughan) and Tom (James McMullen), arrive in Medicine Bow. A large ranch owner in Texas, Tyrone is tired of dealing with drought and has purchased a Wyoming Ranch where he eventually tends to move his large herd. In town he meets an old acquaintance, Judge Garth. His sons and hands have some run-ins with Shiloh's cowhands including Trampas and Steve. Needing more land, Tyrone tries to purchase those of other local ranchers and implies he will take drastic measures if they will not sell, a situation which Judge Garth tries to smooth over.

Much to Mike Tyrone's chagrin, as he has in mind a better match than a cowhand for his daughter, Trampas has become enamoured of the lovely Margaret Tyrone who had returned to her father not long before after being in a convent run school. Trampas and Margaret accidentally meet as a rainstorm approaches and while escorting her home he is thrown from his horse and injures his ankle, subsequent to which their horses run off when spooked by lightning. They are forced to take shelter for the night in a cave and nothing happens except Margaret lets Trampas know she has no romantic feelings for him. They are discovered by Tyrone the next morning and he has his son Tom beat up the injured Trampas.

Margaret feigns a chill so she can go to Shiloh Ranch to stay for a day or two away from her father. When Tyrone arrives to pick up his daughter he finds she and Trampas have secretly run off and everyone assumes they have eloped. The Virginian and Steve discover the water has been cut off from the river which feeds the areas where Judge Garth and other ranchers water their cattle. Judge Garth and the other ranchers find the river has been damned by Tyrone in an attempt to force them to sell out. Just as they are confronting Tyrone, Trampas arrives with a letter for Tyrone from Margaret revealing she had decided to enter a convent and Trampas reveals he had gone along to assist her on her trip. Tyrone has a change of heart and the ranchers remove the dam blocking the river.
