The White House is hopping as the President prepares to make his third State of the Union Address. Before he walks into Congress, the President bows his head and prays. The speech seems to go well (the audience breaks into applause a record number of times) but afterwards all hell breaks loose.
The policeman who President Bartlet pointed to during the speech has a blemish in his past. It seems that he has a citation for police brutality. Later it is discovered that the charges were bogus, and the only reason it’s still on his record is to quiet the African American community.
It seems through some oversight that Ainsley Hayes has never met the President. Sam decides to remedy this. Unfortunately at the time, she is singing and dancing in her bathrobe in her basement office.
Joey Lucas is heading up the phone interviews after the speech. Josh is peevish. He wants the numbers, and he wants them now. Joey assures Josh that he’ll have the numbers in five minutes. Then the lights go out. All the while, Donna is pushing Josh to ask out Joey.
Abigail Bartlet is pissed. Charlie comes in to talk to her and she is rewinding a part of the speech, playing it over and over again. He cut one of her pet projects out of the speech. She is furious that he has begun his reelection campaign without discussing it with her. “We had a deal!”
In Colombia, five DEA officials have been kidnapped and will soon be tortured unless the President can do something to get them out. “It was almost a good day,” Leo says, putting President Bartlet’s feelings in a nutshell.
