Ballroom-Bartlet is giving a speech at a dinner. His speech is focusing on the topic of practical idealism. While the Bartlet is riling up the crowd, Leo receives a phone call and tells Josh they lost five votes on House Bill 802. As the President is being congratulated on his speech, Toby is visibly upset because the President left out part of the speech he wrote. As Toby walks off, he is joined by the rest of the staff who are all heading out of the ballroom the back way. Josh tells C.J. about the losing of the votes, she can’t believe it. Leo is on the phone finding out who the five people who jumped ship were. They are soon joined by the President where Toby asks him about not using part of the “D section” he had written.. Bartlet says he wanted to polish up the speech a little bit. Charlie soon informs the President that the First Lady has called him and told him that the President needs to take his back medication and that she is quite adamant about it. Bartlet says the medication makes him “goofy”, but tells Charlie to give it to him as he is entering the limo.

Roosevelt Room-Same Night- Most of the staff is seen eating Chinese food as Josh is on the phone. Leo says that he’s found out two of the names, Katzenmoyer and Wick. Josh gets off the phone and reveals a third name, O’Bannon. Josh is shocked to learn one of the people is Christopher Wick saying there is no way Wick would jump the fence. The problem with 802 and the five votes is that the President just informed everyone in the speech he just made that they were going to pass 802 on Wednesday, giving them only 72 hours to get the five votes back. Mandy says to definitely not involved the President. Leo asks C.J. what the pressroom is going to be talking about the next few days, she reveals financial disclosure. Leo and the staff then begin discussing how they are going to get the votes. Sam thinks the other two voters are Tillinghouse and Lebrandt meaning the way to get to Tillinghouse is to use Hoynes, which Leo is adamantly against. Leo then notices the time is 2 A.M. and leaves the staff to eating.

Leo’s House- Leo walks through the door and his wife Jenny is seen walking down the stairs. She wants to know why is home so late. Leo reveals that they are five votes down on 802. Jenny then wants to know why Leo has to do it at 2 A.M. in the morning and not during normal business hours and tells him to come to bed. Leo notices a box and wants to know what it is. Jenny reveals it’s a wristwatch from her to him. He wants to know why and she says it was their anniversary.

Title Card- TUESDAY

Toby’s Office- Toby is being questioned by a woman named Leela about the amount of stock he owns. She is questioning why he waited until last year to buy any stock at all and why he chose the one he did. Apparently, he chose to buy $5,000 worth of stock of a an Internet stock and now it’s worth $125,000. The stock rose 71% the day after Ted McGreggor the owner of the company, testified before the Commerce committee. Apparently, Toby was the one who invited McGreggor to testify and now the White House Counsel may have to investigate it. Toby said he didn’t know what McGreggor was going to say to the committee and didn’t care what he was going to say, because he wouldn’t have even understood it. Leela reveals it is a federal crime to manipulate the stock market and that she’s talking to him because she’s a lawyer.

Hallway- Josh and Sam are discussing what each of the 5 voters are going to want to make them join their side again. O’Bannon will want farm subsidies revisited, Katzenmoyer is going to want federal tax-exemption for Metrolink. Sam wants to know how they are going to get five votes in 48 hours without giving away everything. As this is going on, people keep congratulating Josh and he doesn’t know why. Josh says you get them without giving anything away. Josh says they will win by being tough and giving away nothing and he’s going to take that to Leo.

Josh’s Bullpen Area- As Josh and Sam enter, the whole bullpen stands up and claps. Josh still has no idea what’s going on. Donna reveals Josh won the best gift valued over $25 on a financial disclosure report. It was a $1,189 silk smoking jacket from a Ms. Sarah Wissinger. As Sam is walking away Josh says that he’ll take care of Chris Wick and Toby meets him and tells him he has a problem and needs to speak to him for a moment.

Hallway- Leo is telling Margaret that he needs champagne in a high hat and a whole meal under sterling silver. Margaret suggests a violinist as well. Leo says Harry Winston is sending down a necklace as well. It’s clear that this is a makeup for missing his anniversary with Jenny.

Leo’s Office- Josh enters Leo’s office and Leo asks him about violinists. Josh says it gets a little weird after a while, but when he finds out that Leo forgot his and Jenny’s anniversary, he suggests a whole quartet. Josh tells him he is going to see Katzenmoyer and wants to threaten him with his job. Josh says if it doesn’t work, they’ll give Katzenmoyer Metrolink like he wants, but if it does work they should be able to get the other four votes easily.

Outside the Capitol Building- Josh is meeting with Katzenmoyer. It’s is now clear that 802 involves the banning of certain weapons as Josh is asking if anyone in his district would use an uzi. They are discussing how he was elected and Katzenmoyer reveals he’s not raising enough money for his new campaign and that if the N.R.A makes him a target in his next election, he will lose. Josh tells him if he doesn’t vote yes on 802, he won’t even be on the ballot two years from now because he’ll lose in the primary. He says he can’t lose because a democrat won’t even be running against him and Josh reveals the White House can pick someone to. Katzenmoyer can’t believe it and Josh says he can make it happen, all it takes is a visit from the President to his district and place his arm around whatever assistant D.A. he likes and it’s over for him. Josh tells him that the President doesn’t hold a grudge, that’s what he pays him for.

Toby’s Office-- Sam and Toby are discussing the money Toby’s stock is worth and Sam is amazed. Sam says Toby is in no actual trouble but should still hire a lawyer because he technically did commit a felony. However, the PR problem would be huge and probably damaging to the President. Sam says he really probably shouldn’t worry because no one actually reads the report. At that moment, C.J. appears at the door and says she’s going to lunch and she’s a little short, could she borrow $125,000 and laughs. Toby is clearly not amused.

Briefing Room- C.J. is discussing the President’s financial disclosure report as Josh walks into the room. C.J. then tells the press that Josh’s disclosure is coming up later on and they should stay tuned. C.J. and Josh then proceed to walk down the hallway and Josh informs her that he got Katzenmoyer, O’Bannon, and Lebrandt and that Chris Wick is waiting on him. He also says he’s got to get Leo to lighten up about Hoynes so he can get Tillinghouse. C.J. tells him to get Wick first and then they’ll deal with Tillinghouse.

Mural Room-- Josh enters and sees Congressman Christopher Wick waiting for him. It turns out Chris and Josh were in a fraternity together and he promised the minority whip no way Wick would go against this bill. Josh questions Wick about what weapons are in the bill and Wick has no idea. Josh says he put him in his seat and Wick reveals that he gets taken for granted. Wick reveals he voting down the measure that would restrict the sale of deadly weapons because he wasn’t being noticed around the White House and this was a way to get attention. Josh asks him what he wants. Wick says a round of golf and Josh says he doesn’t play golf, but chess. Wick agrees to it as long as a couple of White House photographers are there.

Leo’s Office- Leo is showing the necklace he got for Jenny off to C.J. and Mandy as Sam enters the room. C.J wants to try it on and Toby wants them all to start talking about his situation. Josh comes in ecstatic that he now has four out of the five and has come to ask Leo for Hoynes’ help on Tillinghouse because this needs a Texan. Leo still says no and says he’ll talk to Mark Richardson instead.

Outside the Lincoln Memorial- Leo is seeing talking to Mark Richardson and he is trying to convince Richardson to vote yes. Richardson says he won’t vote yes because they let too many other deadly weapons go and didn’t put them on the bill. Leo says they had to lose them and Richardson says they didn’t fight for them. Leo tries to convince him to vote yes, by telling him most of the people who get sent to the emergency room by these weapons are black. Richardson says the bill is all for show and says that if he comes up with a bill that will save some lives, he’ll sign it. Until then, he votes no.

Josh’s Office- Josh and Mandy are in his office as he receives a call from Leo telling him he couldn’t get Richardson. Mandy says they have to get Hoynes and they need to set up a meeting pronto. Josh tells Leo and he agrees.

Leo’s House- Leo is seen getting out of a cab and walking inside. He goes to the dining room and sees the table is set, but no one is there. Jenny meets him in the hall and informs him she can’t live like this anymore. Leo says he’s sorry, but that this is the most important thing that he will ever do. She says it’s not more important than their marriage. He says while he has this job, yes it is. Jenny puts on her coat and reveals to Leo that Margaret called to confirm his 9:00 P.M. meeting with the Vice President. Leo says he was going to slip out for just 45 minutes and would have been back. Jenny reveals that she can’t take it anymore and that she is leaving and will be at the Watergate. Leo is in shock as Jenny walks out the door.

Vice President’s Office- Vice President Hoynes is in his office as Leo arrives. Leo is still visibly shaken from what has happened with Jenny as he is telling Hoynes about what he needs from him about Tillinghouse. Leo tells Hoynes about his breakup with Jenny. Hoynes asks him if he wants to talk about it and he says no. Hoynes agrees to see Tillinghouse and that he will deliver him. Leo is stunned and tells him how much this will mean to the President. Hoynes then asks Leo when was the last time he went to an A.A meeting. Leo says what meeting could he go to and Hoynes says his. Leo can’t comprehend what meeting Hoynes could show up at and Hoynes reveals he has one once a week at the downstairs at the O.E.O.B. at 11:00 P.M which includes three senators, two cabinet secretaries, one federal judge, and two agency directors. With an agent outside, it all looks like a card game. He tells him he should think about it. Hoynes tells him he is sorry about Jenny and that he will call A.S.A.P. about Tillinghouse.

Title Card- WEDNESDAY

Hallway- Mandy meets up with Josh in the hallway about his smoking jacket from Sarah Wissinger. The disclosure form reveals he received it on July 3rd and they didn’t break up until July 9th. Josh says she didn’t give them to him because she was sleeping with him. Mandy says to don’t talk to him anymore.

Oval Office- Josh and Mandy arrive in the Oval Office with C.J.. Sam, and Toby already in the room. Josh informs them that Hoynes is having a breakfast meeting with Tillinghouse. Leo enters from his office and all of them want to know how Leo’s big night with Jenny went. Leo lies about the whole thing and says it all went perfectly. He also informs them that the President’s back is pretty bad and that he canceled the morning and is going to stay in bed and take some calls there. Just at that moment, the door to the portico opens and Bartlet enters the room in a Notre Dame sweatshirt and blue jeans. Leo asks him why he didn’t stay in bed and the President says he feels fine. It’s pretty evident from his composure that Bartlet has taken a few too much medication. The entire staff looks at him stunned. Bartlet asks what’s going on and Sam tells him they aren’t talking about anything but Toby’s financial disclosure. C.J. asks him if he happened to take his medication and Leo asks him which one he took. Bartlet reveals that he took both of them. C.J. says one of them will take him back to bed and Bartlet says that one of them has a problem and he is going to help them out because they are his family. He then proceeds to call Sam, Toby. The real Toby then begins to tell Bartlet about how he arraigned for his friend to testify in front of the Commerce committee and how he bought an Internet stock that sub sequentially went up right after his friend testified. Bartlet still high off his medication says he knows what to do, and then goes blank. Mandy says he could resign, while Sam suggests the White House Counsel should reveal through C.J. that there was no wrongdoing of any kind and that Toby should reduce his salary for one year to one dollar and immediately cash out his stock. Everyone agrees, except Toby. Bartlet then tells Toby to give him a hug and thankfully Charlie comes in to relieve everyone of the President.

Vice President’s Office- Tillinghouse and Hoynes are meeting about 802. Tillinghouse reveals it’s not a political maneuver, it’s just him voting his conscious. He says as long as there are guns out there, he wants his wife to have one as well. He also says to mention to Josh that threatening people with their jobs isn’t the way to go. Turns out they are all ticked off by the way Josh made them turn their vote around. Hoynes takes this time to tell Tillinghouse that he wants him to vote yes on the resolution and that he should mention this conversation to Katzenmoyer, O’Bannon, Lebrandt, and Wick. Tillinghouse is amazed by Hoynes and asks what’s in it for him. Hoynes says nothing and Tillinghouse questions why he is giving him a victory. Hoynes smiles back and says one day he is going to President and that Tillinghouse is not.

Josh’s Bullpen Area- The television sets all reveal how the bill was passed and that instead of it being a victory for the President, it turned out to be a victory for Vice President Hoynes. C.J. says they should have expected this one from a mile away and Leo says they got what they deserved. Josh is still upset, but Leo tells him they won.

Vice President’s Office- Josh goes to see Hoynes. He goes to tell him congratulations about how well he did and that it seems like he was the only one who did well. Hoynes is then called away by his secretary.

Old Executive Office Building- Leo is seen walking down the stairs. He stops at the door and the guard asks him if he can help him. Leo says he’s here for the card game and the Secret Service Agent lets him in. Leo closes the door behind himself.
